Earlier today, I had the honor of addressing the opening of the 21st Southwest Pacific Hydrographic Commission (SWPHC) meeting, a gathering that brought together esteemed figures such as the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Navy and the leadership of the SWPHC.
In my speech, I stressed the crucial role hydrography plays in navigating the challenges and seizing the opportunities within the vast maritime landscape of the Southwest Pacific. I highlighted our profound connection with the ocean, which forms a core part of our identity, sustenance, and cultural heritage in Fiji and the wider region. This connection makes hydrography indispensable for the management and conservation of our marine resources.
We spoke on the impact of climate change, noting the growing need for hydrographic services to protect our coastal communities and marine biodiversity. I also welcomed the advancements in hydrographic technology, such as autonomous underwater vehicles and advanced sonar systems, for their potential to enhance our surveying capabilities and data accuracy.
We called for stronger collaboration within the SWPHC to address the technical, infrastructural, and financial challenges many island nations face. I urged for a collective effort to bolster hydrographic capabilities across all member nations and stressed the importance of broadening the understanding of hydrography among decision-makers, stakeholders, and the public.
Concluding the address, we evoked the legacy of ancient Pacific navigators, emphasizing our collective responsibility to find innovative solutions, foster collaborative initiatives, and make strategic investments in hydrography. This commitment is essential to ensure a safe, prosperous, and sustainable maritime future for our region. – at Fiji
