Road safety is stronger when we work together. Today we hosted the ROSACU Quarterly Meeting, bringing coalition members together to reflect on ongoing road safety initiatives, share experiences, and identify opportunities to strengthen collective action towards safer roads in Uganda.
The ROSACU Chairperson encouraged members to keep the momentum going within their organisations, actively participate in each other's activities, and engage with relevant government-led road safety initiatives. Different organisations, one shared goal: reducing road crashes and making Uganda's roads safer for everyone. 🇺🇬

Boda-boda transport is a major part of Uganda’s urban and rural mobility, providing livelihoods for many young people while also facing significant road safety challenges. In Moyo District, we engaged boda-boda association leaders to understand the challenges affecting riders and identify practical ways to improve safety within the sector.
The leaders highlighted gaps including limited understanding of some road signs among riders with low literacy levels, limited access to driving licence and insurance services within the district, and inadequate awareness of requirements such as Motor Third Party insurance.
They also called for regular road safety sensitisation, rider training, and accessible IEC materials to strengthen knowledge, compliance, and responsible road use. Effective road safety requires more than one-off training. It requires continued engagement, accessible information, and solutions that respond to the realities riders face every day.

🚕 Road Safety Does Not End After the Sensitisation Session. Listening Matters Too.
We engaged taxi drivers at the Moyo Taxi Park to follow up on the road safety sensitisation activities, understand the challenges they continue to face, and hear directly from them on what can be improved along the corridor.
The drivers highlighted concerns including inconsistent guidance from some road flaggers, slow road works leaving sections slippery during rain, and inadequate road signage in some areas.
For us, road safety training must be followed by continued engagement and feedback. Listening to road users helps identify emerging risks and ensures interventions respond to the realities they face every day.
The drivers appreciated the progress made so far, while noting that some improvements are taking time. They committed to continuing to work with stakeholders towards safer roads and safer journeys.

Today in Yumbe District, we engaged school administrations and student leaders to gather feedback on road safety sensitisation activities conducted in schools.
Students highlighted the need for regular sensitisation, road safety club materials, and resources to keep safety activities active. They also called for speed humps and pedestrian crossings around schools, where speeding vehicles remain a concern.
The feedback will help strengthen our interventions and support safer journeys for learners along the Koboko-Yumbe-Moyo corridor.
The engagement is part of the road safety sensitisation project funded by the World Bank, in partnership with and support from the Ministry of Works and Transport.

Today URRENO joined other stakeholder as they convened for a validation workshop to review the draft final rail transport safety manuals as organized by @MoWT_Uganda. The three modular manuals address safety needs across the railway lifestyle. – at Kampala, Uganda
As part of our ongoing road safety engagements in Koboko District, we met with the Chairman of the Municipality Boda-Boda Riders Association to discuss the growth of rider associations, the challenges facing the sector, and opportunities to strengthen support for boda-boda riders.
Key concerns raised included smuggling, speeding, and failure to comply with traffic regulations, all of which have implications for road safety and the livelihoods of riders.
The engagement also explored why rider associations remain limited and how stronger organisation, road safety awareness, and collaboration can promote responsible riding, improve compliance, and contribute to safer roads for all.

What happens when the people behind the wheel come together for safer roads? Meaningful conversations and stronger partnerships!
In Koboko District, we engaged taxi, bus, and truck drivers’ associations to discuss their challenges, explore support opportunities, and strengthen their role in promoting road safety.
Beyond the discussions, we explored plans for a sports and engagement activity to unite transport operators, foster collaboration, and use sport as a platform to promote responsible driving and safer road use.
The initiative was warmly welcomed by association leaders, who also received road safety resource materials to support awareness and sensitisation among their members.
Together, we are turning driver engagement into collective action for safer roads!

We engaged the Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher of Komba Islamic Primary School in Koboko District to assess road safety progress and discuss ways to protect learners.
The school leadership committed to integrating a Road Safety Club into the existing Scouting Club to promote road safety awareness among learners.
The engagement also highlighted the school access road as a crash hotspot, with previous crashes reportedly involving a parent and PTA member. Speeding and inadequate road signage were identified as key concerns requiring urgent attention.
Together, we are strengthening school-level road safety initiatives and advocating for safer journeys for every learner.

🚨Time to get to work!
We commend @MoWT_Uganda for taking action to address mechanically unsafe taxis on our roads.
Roadworthiness is not optional. Faulty brakes, worn tyres, defective lights and other mechanical defects can put passengers, drivers and other road users at serious risk.
As URRENO, we welcome this initiative and encourage continued enforcement alongside regular inspections, clear standards, operator sensitisation and practical opportunities to rectify defects.
The goal should go beyond impounding vehicles,it should be safer public transport, fewer crashes, fewer injuries and fewer lives lost on our roads.

Kampala’s busy intersections could be made significantly safer with targeted upgrades. 🚦
New Mobility Snapshot assessments have identified major gaps affecting pedestrians and cyclists, while findings at Kitgum House suggest recommended interventions could dramatically reduce the risk of death and serious injury.
And this is why Road safety organisations have now taken the evidence to the Ministry of Works and Transport, calling for the recommendations to inform future road upgrades.
