These figures will keep climbing. The renunciation fee fell from $2,350 to $450 on April 13, but the effect has not reached the lists yet, for two reasons. First, after the oath, the State Department must approve the loss of nationality and pass the file on to the IRS, which takes months: the names published since April mostly belong to people who renounced before the fee cut. Second, those who decided to renounce because of the lower fee could only book an appointment after it was announced, and consulates have long waiting lists. Most of them have not taken the oath yet. Their names should start appearing in 2027.
The real number is also higher than the lists suggest. They depend on information the IRS can match to a taxpayer record. Many accidental Americans, born in the United States and raised elsewhere, often learned only as adults that the U.S. considers them citizens. They never had a Social Security number and never filed a U.S. tax return. When they renounce at a consulate, their name often never makes it onto the list.
Congress has the solution in hand: with residence-based taxation, Americans abroad would no longer be taxed twice, and far fewer would feel they have no choice but to give up their citizenship.

This week, the U.S. Treasury published its latest, tragic list of people who gave up U.S. citizenship or long-term residence. It names 1,331 people for the third quarter. Since January, 4,574 names have appeared on these lists, 16% more than over the same period of 2025 and more than in 2024. You have to go back to 2020 to find a higher nine-month total: 2026 ranks second since 2008. @WaysMeansCmte @WaysandMeansGOP @SenFinance @SenateFinance @YourVoiceAtIRS @RepLaHood @SenToddYoung

“Behind every name on this list, there is often a family who would have preferred to remain American,” said Brandon Mitchener, Executive Director of Tax Fairness for Americans Abroad. “They and their families already pay their taxes where they live. What pushes them out is double taxation and local banks and financial institutions that shut their doors to them. It’s time for Congress to end this injustice.”

Meet Alex in the United Kingdom. Dual citizenship was supposed to give her more freedom and more choices about where she could live.
Instead, her U.S. citizenship has become a tax trap that has cost her jobs, bank accounts, life opportunities and thousands of pounds in professional fees, even though the most U.S. tax she has ever owed was about $8.
Read and share Alex’s story: taxfairnessabroad.pulse.ly/x…
Every year, Alex pays between £400 and £800 to a tax adviser for the privilege of being told she owes nothing. She and her partner have even put off getting married because they are afraid of tax implications they do not yet understand.
Americans abroad should not have to choose between our U.S. citizenship and the freedom to build normal lives in the countries we call home.

On Wednesday, at the Council of the EU, a large majority of Member States backed Spains proposal to write into law that transfers of tax data to third countries shall be deemed necessary for reasons of public interest.
Read that again: deemed necessary. No longer assessed, simply decreed.
The text also provides that the absence of safeguards in the international agreement does not prevent the transfer. Its title: Safeguards applicable to exchanges of information with third countries. An article on safeguards whose purpose is to do without them.
⚖️ All this while the Court of Justice of the EU is examining thirteen questions on the compatibility of #FATCA with the #GDPR (Case C-804/25). The European Commission and the Council Legal Service both expressed reservations in the meeting on the grounds that the Court has been seised. Member States listened, then discussed the best vehicle to do it anyway.
😠 I am angry, and I believe that is legitimate. For years, we have been told that FATCA complies with EU law. If that were true, there would be nothing to secure. Every new attempt to change the law is an admission.
And in all of this, nobody asks the only question that matters: is it right that the banking data of our fellow citizens are sent to the IRS for the sole reason that they were born on American soil?
Accidental Americans are not asking for a privilege. They are asking that the Court be allowed to rule before the law is rewritten to get around it.

Meet John in the United Arab Emirates. He is a born and raised New Yorker who still loves cheering for the Yankees and the Knicks, and he takes genuine pride in being American.
But living abroad as a U.S. citizen has turned that pride into a never-ending compliance nightmare. CFC rules, GILTI, PFIC and phantom income tax mean John has spent tens of thousands of dollars to stay compliant, even when his U.S. tax bill is zero.

When he tried to open a brokerage account abroad, he was denied. The list of countries the institution would not work with included Iran, Russia, North Korea and the United States. His U.S. passport, the thing he was always told was the greatest asset in the world, had become a liability.
Americans abroad should not have to choose between our citizenship, our identity and basic access to the global financial system.

ABCK–AmCham Kuwait has joined the call for residence-based taxation for Americans abroad.
For more than four decades, AmCham Kuwait has supported American business engagement in Kuwait. Its members include companies and professionals working across energy, defense, aviation, finance, logistics, health care, education, technology, infrastructure and professional services.

Their message to Congress is clear: citizenship-based taxation imposes a direct competitive disadvantage on American workers and businesses.
When companies send American personnel overseas, they often have to provide tax advisory support, tax equalization and additional compensation simply to offset burdens that do not apply to workers from other countries.
Residence-based taxation would help Americans abroad remain globally mobile, support U.S. companies overseas and compete on equal footing in markets like Kuwait.

Help us fight for a fairer system: taxfairnessabroad.pulse.ly/0…
Americans who live and work abroad already pay taxes where they live. Yet the United States continues to tax based on citizenship rather than residence, leaving ordinary Americans overseas to navigate an expensive and complicated second tax system, even when they owe the U.S. nothing.
It doesn’t have to be this way.
Residence-based taxation would bring the United States in line with the rest of the world and allow Americans abroad to live normal financial lives in the countries they call home.

A mother in the United Kingdom lost the roof over her children’s heads after U.S. tax rules kept her name off the family home.
Read and share her story: taxfairnessabroad.pulse.ly/1…
She had American citizenship through her father and lived in the United States for just one year as a teenager. Decades later, U.S. citizenship-based taxation followed her to England and turned an ordinary family home into a tax trap.
Because the house was in her husband’s name after divorce, he could sell it. She and her children lost their home.
Congress should support residence-based taxation so Americans abroad can build normal lives, buy homes and protect our families where we actually live.

A summer job worked entirely in Canada should not require U.S. Tax Court, a university tax clinic and a treaty dispute.
But buried in a routine 2024 report from the University of Washington’s federal tax clinic is exactly that story: a dual U.S.-Canadian citizen living in Canada, caught in a system that taxes people based on their passport rather than where they live.

The clinic invoked the U.S.-Canada tax treaty. IRS Appeals refused because of the saving clause. For citizens, the exception swallows the rule.
This is why residence-based taxation matters. We are not asking for a loophole. We are asking Congress to end the taxation of income that has nothing to do with the United States.

From costly compliance and self-employment taxes to banking restrictions and barriers to entrepreneurship, Christian’s experience shows how citizenship-based taxation can turn ordinary life abroad into a financial and administrative minefield.
