Earlier today, we were honored to receive our official accreditation from the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Accreditation Group. We are assessed by WILEAG every four years — the assessment explores all aspects of our department to ensure our operations, policies, and procedures are in line with best practices in policing. With this reaccreditation, UWPD remains the only triply accredited law enforcement agency in Wisconsin.

Please help us congratulate Law Enforcement Dispatch Supervisor Dawn Veirs on earning her Emergency Number Professional certification through the National Emergency Number Association! It's an incredibly difficult certification to obtain — on top of that, she's one of only two people in the state (and the FIRST woman!) who currently hold BOTH national 911 organizations’ (NENA and APCO) professional certifications. Congratulations, Dawn!!

After careful and thoughtful consideration, UWPD has decided not to renew its annual contract with Flock Safety, which ended on June 26, 2026. The decision to transition away from Flock was made so that UWPD can work toward identifying an automated license plate reader (ALPR) vendor that better meets UW-Madison’s public safety needs. Police Officer Derek Austin and K9 Mavi recently attended the Colorado K9 Conference, joining handlers and trainers from across the country for four days of intensive training and professional development. The conference focused on the latest K9 training techniques, best practices, and emerging trends in the field. PO Austin and K9 Mavi performed at a high level throughout the event and received positive feedback from instructors and fellow handlers alike. Great work, Derek and Mavi! 🐾

Today is a bittersweet day as we wish K9 Ritter a happy retirement after nine years of dedicated service to the UW–Madison community and beyond. Since joining UWPD in 2017, Ritter and Officer Justin Zurbuchen have worked side by side as an explosives-detection and human-tracking team, helping keep our campus safe through 327 deployments, countless special events, and every single Wisconsin football home game during Ritter's career. Ritter, thank you for your unwavering dedication, hard work, and loyal service. We know you'll enjoy trading long tracks and security sweeps for a well-deserved retirement with the Zurbuchen family. We'll miss seeing you around campus, but we're so excited for your next restful chapter. Enjoy retirement, Ritter! 🐾💙
