In Germany, Ukraine, and the United States alike, strikes on Yandex data centers coincided with a sharp decline in bot traffic. And it's not just ordinary users noticing this — researchers are already reporting their initial findings. Similar patterns were observed with Iranian botnets when Tehran faced serious trouble at home and had to scale back its online operations. I will never tire of repeating this: social media, in its current form, is evil. And much like guinea pigs, these platforms are neither truly social nor genuine networks. The fact that people increasingly rely on them for information is a genuine societal catastrophe. This is an algorithmic swamp designed to maximize the time people spend trapped inside it, using mechanisms similar to gambling, enhanced by personalized manipulation through big data. It destroys attention spans and cognitive abilities while making people addicted to emotional roller coasters and cheap dopamine. That alone is enough to inflict long-term damage on the social fabric of societies worldwide. But the situation becomes truly catastrophic when most of these platforms are either directly connected to destructive, anti-democratic regimes or owned by greedy, unscrupulous individuals willing to tolerate those regimes' influence operations for enormous profits — even when those operations undermine their own societies. Some of these owners have even decided to play God themselves. China and Russia did not build their Great Firewalls and sovereign internet systems by accident. The paranoid nature of these regimes drives them to defend themselves not necessarily where others might genuinely harm them, but where they themselves intend to harm others. Considering the enormous resources devoted to these defensive projects, one can only imagine the destructive potential they recognize in these technologies. Similarly, the recommendation feed of China's domestic version of TikTok somehow contains far less of the pseudo-political bullshit and other forms of informational garbage constantly dumped onto users in Europe. Fact-checking will never be enough to solve this problem. But burned-out data centers might just point us in the right direction.
