I wonder if we have to think about how most younger Japanese media otakus in Japan are driven by the web-novel/light novel culture, as opposed to "TV manga" culture of the 70s-90s, and visual novel culture of the 90s-2000s.

Has otaku culture in Japan changed?
This is the question I think more people should be actively asking.
It's why getting manga adapted into live action J-drama was seen as more prestigious than merely adapted into anime.
If it's made into a J-drama, people of all generation can watch it without feeling as embarrassed about it...

The overseas image and understanding of otakus remains largely shaped by 1970s to 1990s era of otakus. That modern otakus are part of the 1999-2020s era with a very different outlook is one of the confusion for the overseas folks interacting with otakus today.

How otaku subculture changed in Japan from the 90s to 2020s warrants greater deal and attention if people are to understand and interact with modern otakus.
I think maybe we do need a history of Japanese otakus from the 90s to 2020s era written and translated into English and other languages. Most otakus history only covers the 1970s to 1990s era.

Godzilla movies regardless are legit about the humans first going all the way back to the original. U can’t really just ignore that part of the franchise knowing how integral they are.

GxK is amazing from start to finish and gives zero attention to the stupid ass humans.
