A successful 2026 Maryland Microbrewery Festival on Sat.! The day started w/ sun & blue sky, but a Nor'easter brought showers and later steady rain ending the event early. But crowds were good and a great time was had by all. Thanks so much to everyone who made the day possible! – at Westminster, MD

Conestoga Wagons like this, carrying cargo & goods headed to market, once jammed the turnpike through Union Mills, along with Stage Coaches carrying mail & travelers. Union Mills provided a welcome respite with food, drink, and needed services including overnight accommodations.

250 years ago, inhabitants of north-central MD, now Carroll County (then Frederick Co.), also were forming into flying camps in response to Geo. Washington's calls for help in the NYC area. Some new soldiers were angered they couldn't vote in Maryland's 1st election that month.

Union Mills' early history included decades as a stage coach tavern, where travelers along a busy turnpike could relax, eat, drink, and share news of the day. This #InternationalBeerDay we remember that history and look forward to the MD Microbrewery Festival here on 9/26.

This date in 1863, a day after the Battle of Westminster (Corbit's Charge), both Confederate and Union forces would be in Union Mills. Just hours after Stuart's Cavalry rode out, Sykes' V Corps of the Union Army arrived. Brig. Gen. Barnes made the Homestead his HQ that night.
