Every document AI demo I’ve seen starts with a clean PDF. That’s a problem, because almost no one’s real data looks like that. The files that break production: the claim faxed twice, the form with notes in the margin, the table that spills onto page three. Those are the pages where an agent quietly reads the wrong column or guesses at a blank, and no one notices until a customer does. Our industry has gotten too comfortable judging parsers on documents picked to make them look good. So we’re offering a different test. Send us up to 25 of your toughest pages plus what your current parser returns. Within 24 hours, a named engineer sends back Transform’s output side by side. Free, and you keep it either way. unstructured.io/hot-mess-tes…

We may not be paying attention to it too much, but if you think about it, the entire šŸŒ around us runs on documents. Speeding tickets, insurance claims, leases, lab results and so much more. Most of them end up as PDFs, scans, faxes or a photo someone took on their phone, so getting reliable, structured data out of them at scale is still a real hassle. Transform is our love letter to doing that better than "sending it to a frontier model" Try it out :)
An agent reads 10,000 documents overnight. If 1 page in 200 is wrong, that’s 50 bad decisions before anyone wakes up. We're so excited to launch Unstructured Transform, our biggest update since we open-sourced Unstructured four years ago. Top table score against three frontier models, the least invented text, and $0.015 a page.

We’re excited to launch Unstructured Transform, our document parser built for the docs agents struggle with most. Frontier models are really good at reading a page now. But the documents our customers care about aren’t clean pages. They’re credit agreements with three levels of merged headers, insurance claims that have been scanned and re-scanned, lab panels, bills of materials, and 10-Ks with tables that spill across pages. And when an agent is the one reading them, small mistakes get expensive fast (one number lands in the wrong column and a payment goes out wrong, with nobody in the loop to catch it). So we tested Transform against GPT-6 Astra, Claude Opus 5.5 and Gemini 3.8 Flash on 224 pages of real business docs. Here’s how it stacks up: #1 on tables: 0.896 (next best: 0.845) Lowest hallucination rate: 5.0% (frontier models: 7.4 to 7.6%) $0.015 a page, about 1/7 the cost of GPT-6 Astra We’d love to see what you’re building with it! unstructured.io/blog/unstruc… #DocumentAI #AgenticAI #DocumentParsing #EnterpriseAI #Unstructured

This week I helped write this Notebook on converting Documents to Stylized HTML using @UnstructuredIO 's VLM based Partitioning Strategy. this parser feels really interesting to me because unlike a lot of the parsers that output json or markdown, the Vision Language Model here outputs a HTML of every page. The reason for html is also based on a simple intuition: if you delete the original source, does your parsed output still contain everything you need? It’s also my hunch that since these Large Language Models have primarily seen a lot of web-scale data, hence making them talk in HTML would be more familiar to them compared to a different language. Check out the notebook here: colab.research.google.com/gi…

Wrote this quick blog + notebook over the week on my thoughts on "Memory" and how it can be used alongside LLMs. What I really liked is the personalisation it can provide at a user level and what I'm curious to see is if there's anyone finding patterns from this at scale :)
Your RAG retrieves the right documents, then gives every user the same answer. Unstructured can help you preprocess the documents so that your RAG is highly accurate, but personalization is an entirely different story that requires a memory mechanism. 1/🧵

OCR document parsing metrics create a fundamental problem: they punish generative models for being "different," even when they're actually right. A model can extract every piece of information perfectly, but if it formats the output slightly differently than expected, it gets penalized by rigid evaluation criteria. This mismatch between technical accuracy and practical utility led us to develop SCORE, a new semantic evaluation framework for generative document parsing. Rather than fixating on exact format matching, SCORE evaluates what truly matters: whether a vision-language model actually understood and preserved the document's content, structure and meaning. You can explore the full methodology in our paper: arxiv.org/pdf/2509.19345 This philosophy of prioritizing substance over form extends to how we think about parsing solutions more broadly. The best outcomes come from flexibility: choosing approaches that align with your specific data, workflows, and business requirements. That's precisely why Unstructured doesn't lock you into a single parser or model. Our platform provides multiple parsing strategies and seamlessly integrates with leading vision-language models—from Claude to GPT-4o to Gemini—with new options continuously added as the field advances. Every solution we offer is rigorously benchmarked against real-world scenarios. As new models and techniques emerge, we evaluate them, optimize their performance, and make them available to you. This means you're never constrained by today's capabilities and continuously benefit from tomorrow's advancements without the friction of constant migration or integration work.

This is an excellent observation! That's why we added image description enrichment option in @UnstructuredIO 9 months ago, and users've been loving it :)
I am once again shocked at how much better image retrieval performance you can get if you embed highly opinionated summaries of an image, a summary that came out of a visual language model, than using CLIP embeddings themselves. If you tell the LLM that the summary is going to be embedded and used to do search downstream. I had one system go from 28% recall at 5 using CLIP to 75% recall at 5 using an LLM summary. And it took me only about 40 minutes to improve the summarization prompt.

The Document AI space has seen a fundamental shift in the past year. Everyone—from scrappy startups to established players—has pivoted from custom supervised models to wrapping the same handful of closed-source multimodal models. Yet, despite the fact we're all using essentially the same approach and the same models under the hood, there's no shortage of ā€œbenchmark triumphsā€ from Document AI vendors touting the best performance on the market. I especially find it comical when these vendors compare their product against ours at @UnstructuredIO , and yet instead of comparing their VLM wrapper against our VLM wrapper (which according to our own benchmarks outperforms theirs), they compare it to our free, open source product—a product that doesn't depend on massive, powerful, expensive closed source models. *blink blink* I'm sorry, but that's like comparing public transportation in Rome to driving an Alfa Romeo 4C Spider convertible through the Tuscan hills—they were designed for different intents in mind. Here’s the truth: when Fortune 500 teams run real head-to-head evaluations—our commercial platform consistently performs on par or better than the best in the business. Month to month, we trade #1 spots with the leaders. But the bigger problem is this: benchmark theater is costing enterprises greatly. Choosing a vendor that is touted via their own benchmarks as having the best-in-class transform of pdfs, but can't process other document types results in organizations having to build a rats nest of supplemental home-grown capabilities that require management, maintenance, and eventually grows to the point where it needs to be swapped out with a more scalable solution. Those glossy accuracy charts usually measure PDFs in isolation—while critical data in .docx, .pptx, .eml, .msg, .tiff, .epub, or .xlsx files goes completely unseen. And what about model fallback, dynamic content-based routing, retries, and all the other features needed to ensure your VLM wrapper actually works at scale? Finally, let's not forget the factor that when it comes to benchmark performance, most vendors fine-tune (to the point of overfitting) prompts to perform well on major public benchmarks. At the end of the day, document transformation quality isn’t about cherry-picked metrics. It’s about coverage, fidelity, metadata richness, and mitigating the cost of missed information. LangGraph has been one of the easiest/most customizable tools I've used recently to build Agentic Workflows. Every workflow is a graph, each node is a function call. Make a couple nodes LLMs and you have an Agentic workflow all set up.
