There's a neuroscience lab where a robot named Hektor tickles people's bare feet. For science. 🧵 What I took away from the new Nature Human Behaviour paper on ticklishness 👇
1/ 448 people from Chinese, Dutch and Greek backgrounds mapped where they're ticklish. The maps came out nearly identical: neck, armpits, belly, soles.
2/ Tickling is its own sensation. A machine-learning model could tell the tickle map apart from maps of touch, pain and pleasure.
3/ Darwin guessed the least-touched spots are the most ticklish. His idea held up best, but no single theory explains it all.
4/ When a partner does the tickling, the map expands to the inner thighs and groin 👀

NEW AD: Have you seen these anti-Talarico attack ads?
Elon Musk paid for nearly all of them.
The world's first trillionaire knows if he drags the most corrupt politician in Texas across the finish line, Ken Paxton will owe him everything.
@ElonMusk: Texas is not for sale.

This is so racist and sickening.
A man stands up at JD Vance’s rally and says “release the Epstein files”.
Vance then implies that he’s an illegal immigrant, because of his skin color.

ICE run over U.S. citizen riding his bike—break his arm.
Agents handcuff him behind his back without calling paramedics.
They inflict even more injuries—send him to the hospital in serious condition.
Then agents detain another U.S. citizen—for yelling at them on the sidewalk.
Man with the broken arm's daughter says he was hit on his e-bike by an unmarked car.
He was then tased twice and pinned to the ground—currently receiving treatment at the hospital.
Multiple ICE vehicles were running through stop signs—speeding the wrong way down one-way streets.
All on a weekend afternoon with kids playing outside.
Incident occurred near the intersection of East 56th Street & Elm Avenue in Long Beach, California.
Stop ICE Net doesn't have an account on this platform—so posting first full length, English translated, and credited video here to help raise awareness.
The comments in this screenshot, translated:
“To put it bluntly: I suggest slaughtering gays, you know? 😂”
“The central government should hurry up and crack down hard on this group.”
“Just kill them all and be done with it 😂👍”
They’re from China’s TikTok, under a post tagged “anti-discrimination” and “equality.” The account I’m quoting wouldn’t translate them because they’re too vile. I’m translating them because people in the West should see this.
I know a lot of people in the West find it hard to believe how extreme my family was toward me, or the large cyberbullying campaign university students ran against me. This is the environment it happened in.
And sadly, Tiktok is where mainstream China is. The Chinese people you meet on X had to leave China or get around the Great Firewall to be here, and they tend to be more open-minded. Even so, look at the replies under the post I’m quoting: they got so bad the account had to limit who can reply.
No matter what Chinese official accounts say about “banning discrimination,” gay people in China have no marriage equality and no law protecting them from discrimination, and their groups keep getting shut down. In 2021, WeChat deleted dozens of university LGBTQ student accounts in a single night. In 2023, the Beijing LGBT Center closed, citing “forces beyond our control.”
Homophobia exists everywhere, including in the US. What’s different is whether anything can push back: laws, courts, a free press, the right to organize, the right to vote. In China, those are missing or shut down.
If you’re American, you still have all of them. The midterms are Nov 3. Please vote.
