This post remains extremely controversial, bleeding into replies on other tweets, with seemingly no one actually understanding what i meant by it so let me explain: First, Anakin poasting was fun and interesting for the first few hours. There was clearly a case of memetic eupohria on the TL. However, once everyone started trying to farm it with increasingly lower quality rips, it lost significant aura. By day 2 it was becoming pretty cringe. I wrote this on day one while it was on the upswing. The algorithm didnt show it to anyone until the second day on the down swing. Had i written it on day 2, and seen how quickly it was burning, i would written it differently. However, even the original take is not looking at where the puck was but where it was going and also what its competitors are doing, which many are missing. Being able to repurpose an idea that already exists in mass consciousness IS the holy grail of cultural persuasion. For example, The left repurposing “liberal” from libertarian to leftist was a once in a century rhetorical move. As was taking the christian ideas of charity and equality before God and redirecting them into welfare states and feminism. Star Wars was arguably the most popular media franchise in existence for Boomers and Gen X. And it was literally, by Lucas’s own admission, WWII in space—the rag tag diverse rebels against the evil space Nazis. It is hard to dispute it is not the closest thing we have to a dramatic retelling of the core mythos of our present age. Thus, if one COULD repurpose to it invert that mythos, successfully gaining major traction at rebranding Anakin as the good guy, it would be a holy grail, perhaps equal in power to the leftist reframes mentioned above, because of how hard it would open a backdoor into the WWII mythos that governs our age. Now, whether Anakin actually has the story beats to be successfully rebranded, or whether the new right maintains enough creative chops to do it without becoming cringe is a second question. Personally as someone who has not seen the prequels in 20 years, know little about Star Wars, but have experience several memetic euphorias that had significant staying power (most notably, Trump 2016) I took a bet that it would simmer and percolate into a undergirding current. Had i known a lot more about Star Wars lore, perhaps i wouldnt have made that bet. Certainly, 24 hours later i became much less confident in it as i saw the the immediate crashout. With that said, i will continue to shit out takes when they occur to me, making bets on ideas and future prediction with zero change in strategy. Most of them you will never see. Some of them will go viral and you will think they are the smartest thing ever. Others will go viral and you will think they are the dumbest thing ever. Thats the cost of doing business and its not gonna change.
