When a man and woman build a life together, whose goals get treated as the family’s future, and whose get treated as something they can do if there’s time left? Look at the actual decisions. Who gets uninterrupted time to work? Who is expected to rearrange everything when a child gets sick? Whose spending needs an explanation? Who gets a say in where the family lives? Different responsibilities can make sense. Both people still need a meaningful say in the life they’re helping build. If you expect your partner to make sacrifices for your future, what are you willing to sacrifice for theirs?

If you earn more money than your partner, should you get more say in the relationship? Say one person works for a paycheck while the other cares for the children, cooks, cleans, and handles everything that would otherwise have to get done after work. Does the person earning money get the final say on spending, where they live, and how the household runs? How would you want those decisions made if you were the one doing the unpaid work?
