Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul rejected the idea of a group photo with Lavrov, warning against false signals of normality with Russia.
Ukrainians understood this long ago.
I’m Ukrainian, a researcher in sociology and political philosophy specializing in propaganda.
I was born on February 24. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion, my birthday has symbolized resistance, resilience, and Ukraine’s future victory. Every year, I dress up, carry our flag, and join demonstrations.
FEBRUARY 24, 2023. PARIS.
On my birthday, I attended a demonstration wearing a Ukrainian flower crown and carrying our flag. My photo appeared in the French press.
But here’s what happened behind the scenes.
I HAD BARELY STEPPED INTO THE DEMONSTRATION WHEN A RUSSIAN WOMAN APPROACHED ME WITH A TEENAGER.
This is why I never underestimate Russian political strategists. They are highly skilled at working methodically with emotions, symbols, psychology, and public perception.
Sometimes you’ve barely entered a public event before your image becomes useful for someone else’s narrative.
The woman praised my beauty, courage, and strength, then said her child wanted a photo with me.
The teenager looked frightened. I felt sorry for him, but immediately considered the consequences.
One photograph could become propaganda about “brotherly peoples,” forgiveness, and reconciliation while Russia continued killing Ukrainians.
I looked around. Ukrainians, French people, and Georgians were watching.
I calmly replied:
“I’m sorry, but not while the war continues.”
I refused.
AND GUESS WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
At the end of the demonstration, the same woman took the stage:
“I know you will never forgive us, but please forgive us.”
ARE YOU SERIOUS?!
We had gathered to commemorate Ukrainian victims, not to center Russian feelings.
People around me said: “She should have kept quiet!”
BUT HERE’S THE TWIST.
Later, I discovered she was a sociologist.
A woman trained to understand society and human behavior had approached me through compliments and a child, then publicly appealed for forgiveness.
I cannot prove she was conducting an organized operation. But I recognized the potential for manipulation immediately.
RUSSIAN POLITICAL INFLUENCE OPERATIONS MUST NEVER BE UNDERESTIMATED.
Russia has sophisticated political strategists who understand how images and emotions shape public opinion.
Sometimes propaganda wears the mask of a dove of peace. Sometimes all it needs is one photograph.
That’s why refusing a photo with Lavrov matters.
My attention was on Ukraine then. It remains on Ukraine today.

Stanford University student Elsa Johnson became a target of the Chinese Communist Party in 2024.
Elsa attended a private school as a child with a heavy focus on foreign languages and became fluent in Mandarin Chinese while still in elementary school. Years later after she was accepted to Stanford, she studied international relations and researched Chinese industry and military tactics while working at the Hoover Institution on campus.
She soon came to the attention of members of the Chinese Communist Party, which has a heavy presence at Stanford and throughout Southern California. There are currently more than 1,000 Chinese students attending Stanford each year, and the university has received more than $64,000,000 in private donations from Chinese individuals and organizations since 2010.
In June 2024, a man claiming to be a fellow Stanford student named Charles Chen contacted her online. She was not initially suspicious as they had many mutual associates, and his photos and posts appeared to be centered on campus. But his questions and requests quickly put her on edge as he invited her on a paid trip to China. And he seemingly knew details about her that she had never shared with him.
When she tried to disengage with him, she began receiving threatening phone calls by Chinese speakers. Elsa contacted Stanford administrators and the FBI, who told her Charles was likely affiliated with the Ministry of State Security, had been posing as a Stanford student for years, and had targeted at least ten other female students since 2020 in a similar manner. They also told her she was under physical surveillance on campus by the Chinese Communist Party.
Elsa wrote articles in the Stanford Review and The Free Press about Chinese influence on campus, and in March 2026 testified about espionage threats on college campuses before the House Committee on Education and Workforce.

Anna, a young mother of twins, was cooking and looking after her kids and little niece when russia struck Kremenchuk yesterday.
She managed to shield her niece with her own body, saving the child's life. Anna herself suffered fatal injuries.
It was her husband's 35th bday 💔
