🚒 A MESSAGE FROM FIREFIGHTERS TO TEEN DRIVERS: YOUR LIFE IS WORTH THE EXTRA SECOND.
This National Teen Driver Safety Week, Virginia Beach firefighters have one important message for teen drivers: Make safe choices behind the wheel. Every trip. Every time.
We respond to crashes that can change lives in an instant. Many are preventable. We want you to make it home safely—not just today, but every day.
🚗 Before you put the car in drive, remember:
📵 Put your phone away. No text is worth a life.
🪢 Buckle up. Every seat. Every ride.
🚦 Follow speed limits and never drive recklessly.
🍺 Never drive impaired—or get in a car with someone who is.
😴 Never drive when you're too tired to focus.
👀 Keep your eyes on the road and your attention on driving.
To teen drivers: We want you to enjoy your freedom, make memories, and have a bright future ahead. The choices you make behind the wheel matter—not just to you, but to everyone sharing the road.
Get there safely. Your family, your friends, and your firefighters want you home. ❤️

Close before you doze!
Today is Test it Tuesday
Tonight, try sleeping with your bedroom door closed.
A closed door can help slow down the spread of smoke, heat, and flames. Allowing more time for your family more time to escape.

🔥🚒Ladder Academy: Training Today’s Firefighters for Tomorrow’s Challenges!
The Virginia Beach Fire Department recently completed an intensive four-day Ladder Academy, with 23 students sharpening their skills in critical ladder company operations.
Throughout the academy, students received hands-on training in forcible entry, search operations, victim removal, ventilation, hazardous materials (Hazmat), and vehicle rescue.
Each class recognizes one student with the Top Performer Award, honoring someone who consistently demonstrates a positive attitude, a strong work ethic, and a genuine commitment to learning.
🧑🚒Congratulations to MFF John Mason, this class’s Top Performer Award recipient! His dedication and drive to improve reflect the professionalism and commitment we strive for every day at VBFD.

👏 Congratulations, MFF Kevin Berard (22-A)!
Please join Fire Chief Ken Pravetz in congratulating Kevin on graduating from Virginia Beach’s EMS Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) program!
This 40-hour training program equips first responders with the knowledge and skills to recognize mental health challenges, increase awareness, and use verbal de-escalation techniques when assisting individuals experiencing a mental health crisis.
CIT is a collaborative effort involving law enforcement, mental health professionals, and other first responders, all working together to better serve and support members of our community.
Thank you, Kevin, for your continued dedication to the Virginia Beach Fire Department and the community we proudly serve! 👏🚒

🌊 TRAINING FOR THE MOMENT THAT MATTERS MOST
This week, Virginia Beach Fire Department conducted its Fire Rescue Swimmer Course—a four-day intensive program designed to prepare firefighters for one of the most challenging rescue environments: the surf.
From powerful waves to multiple-victim scenarios, students faced realistic conditions designed to test their skills, judgment, teamwork, and ability to operate safely in an unpredictable environment.
🌊 Day 1: Heavy surf conditions during a Nor’easter challenged students in the same type of dangerous environment they may encounter during an actual emergency.
🏄 Day 2: Students trained in paddleboard rescue techniques, multiple-victim rescues, and operations around the jetty while managing multiple hazards.
🚤 Day 3: Fire Rescue Swimmers worked alongside fireboat crews, practicing techniques to locate, reach, recover, and safely remove patients from the water.
🚨 Day 4: Students operated from personal watercraft, conducting rescues of both active and unresponsive patients and putting their skills to the test from the back of a Jet Ski.
This is more than a training course. It’s about building confidence, sharpening skills, strengthening teamwork, and preparing our firefighters to make a difference when someone’s life is on the line.
Because when the call comes, there’s no room for hesitation.

TIP #2 - Fire Prevention Week
🔋Charge on a hard, flat surface like a table, desk, or floor. Beds, couches, and pillows can trap heat and block airflow, which can cause a battery to overheat and catch fire. 🔥

It’s a great time to make fire safety part of the conversation at home.
Here are some tips to keep in mind:
• Test your smoke alarms and replace batteries as needed.
• Create and practice a fire escape plan with your family.
• Keep flammable items away from heat sources.
• When cooking, never leave food unattended.
A little preparation can go a long way in helping keep our students, families and communities safe!
