A viral ICE shooting in New York City has sparked protests, arrests and a heated debate over immigration enforcement, sanctuary city policies and the use of force by federal immigration officers.
ICE officers were attempting to arrest 28-year-old Dominican national Oscar Belgal in the Marble Hill area of New York when the encounter escalated. According to federal authorities, Belgal accelerated his vehicle, struck ICE vehicles and appeared to drive toward officers. An ICE officer subsequently opened fire, reportedly firing seven rounds and striking Belgal near the neck. Belgal's five-year-old son was reportedly inside the vehicle and was not physically injured.
DHS has also alleged that Belgal has ties to the Trinitarios gang, although publicly available evidence has not independently established that he is a confirmed gang member. Belgal previously pleaded guilty to fourth-degree grand larceny and also faces a pending drug-sale charge, to which he has pleaded not guilty.
Following the ICE shooting, protesters gathered near the hospital where Belgal was being treated, demanding accountability and an end to ICE operations in New York City. The demonstrations resulted in confrontations with NYPD officers and multiple arrests before ICE transported Belgal into federal custody.
