Happy to see that our @cityofguelph has started implementing leading Pedestrian Interval intersection signals. However we need to ramp up implementation of this low cost but highly effective pedestrian safety measure @VisionZeroCA . @lirazfridman1 @JennieJuste @ParticipACTION

I’ve seen a lot of victim-blaming by police and media when drivers kill pedestrians. A LOT. But I don’t think I’ve ever read ANYTHING quite this stupid, infuriating and irresponsible. From Calgary police and media.
A Dodge Ram driver smashed into a bus shelter while speeding killing someone - and the police are perplexed as to why the victim was in the bus shelter because "he does have a vehicle" cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/s…

Almost every major thoroughfare I came across in Montreal had a separated two-way bike track, most with a curb separator, some with flex posts. I saw no painted-line only bike lanes. Also, I saw no sidewalks closed for construction that didn’t include a bypass.

The core of our argument is that 'active travel' is generally framed & treated too narrowly - as just walking and cycling. There are a whole range of other modes that could be brought into the scope of active travel and we suggest there are significant benefits to doing so 🧵2/

#streetdesign tip: Where major streets meet minor ones, cities can make intersections safer by using "gateway" treatments like curb extensions, raised crossings, and tight curb radii. These treatments help make people aware they're entering a slow-speed environment.

When it came to creating a new elevated tramway in The Hague’s Beatrixkwartier, the challenge was simple: Create a light and open structure that would connect—rather than carve—the neighborhood with a dynamic and attractive addition to the public space. We think they nailed it. – at The Hague, The Netherlands

Interesting learnings "Cycling in Paris" yesterday. Paris now has more cycling trips in rush hour than car trips! Strategy: Every street provides for cycling: separated bike lanes on busy roads and low car traffic volume + 30km/h speed limit in all other streets. @sara_stace

Most people everywhere want to live on slower streets so that they can enjoy them. Give the streets back to people.

A tale of two front ends parked side by side: two “work” trucks, one has great visibility, sloping nose and a close windshield, the other has its hood at my shoulder height it is so long that it reduces capacity, and makes no sense at all.

Most people in British Columbia want to live on slower streets. What are we waiting for?
Our latest release: In 2019, public support for a lower speed limit on British Columbia’s residential streets stood at 58%. The proportion climbed to 61% in 2021 and has increased again this year to 66%. researchco.ca/2022/06/10/spe…

"There isn't enough room in that street for a cycle lane." There probably would be, if we hadn't incrementally supersized cars. Graphic via @floris_mrfart

This incredible invention whisks 900 people from the heart of London to the center of Rotterdam in just over three hours. The tools needed for a low-carbon future aren’t waiting to be discovered by billionaires; they already exist and are waiting to be discovered by politicians. – at Camden Town, London

This makes sense. Your bigger vehicle is more dangerous and takes up more space.
Personal vehicles have been getting bigger & bigger. This German city is making SUV/truck owners pay 6X more for an annual parking permit, with € going to improving public transit. Those with disabilities or needing such a vehicle for work are exempted. theguardian.com/world/2021/s…

The work vehicle on the left has a flat nose and ample front and side fenestration, affording the driver direct vision of other street users. The toy vehicle on the right with the preposterously high hood and small windows limits the drivers ability to see other street users.

This is the way to do 30k. Re-set the limits in a wide swath, focussing on residential streets. Then you can install speed bumps & other calming measures to align with that ppl-friendly limit. Congrats to @MathieuFleury, & to all who made this happen. xitter.cf/MathieuFleury/status/1…
A fabulous 😊 community map showing, with this morning's committee approval (in blue), that #Lowertown, #SandyHill and #Vanier communities residentials streets are 30km/h speed limits. A first in #Ottawa 👋
