In our latest Vital Health Podcast, Duane Schulthess (@DuaneSchulthess) speaks with Eric Lindquist about the decline in biotech venture funding. Eric describes more companies seeking funding than venture capital firms with money to deploy, making investors more selective. He also explains how mandates to invest in European or U.S. companies narrow fundraising options. When European and U.S. medicine prices are set separately, a company can accept a lower European price to generate revenue from another market while preserving its higher U.S. margins. Most Favored Nation (MFN) reference pricing could change that by using the lower European price to set the U.S. price. For companies that earn most of their profits in the U.S., the additional European sales may not offset the reduction in profits across their U.S. business, giving them a reason to delay or reconsider a European launch. In our latest Vital Health Podcast, Duane Schulthess (@DuaneSchulthess) speaks with Eric Lindquist about Most Favored Nation (MFN) and the need for consistent policy. #VitalHealthPodcast #MFN #DrugPricing #MarketAccess

In our latest Vital Health Podcast, Duane Schulthess (@DuaneSchulthess) and Harry Bowen explain how Most Favored Nation (MFN) pricing could change a company's decision to launch a medicine in Europe. A lower negotiated European price could become the reference for its U.S. price. Harry Bowen argues that protecting U.S. profits could then outweigh the benefit of additional European sales, giving companies an incentive to withhold launches in lower-priced markets. #VitalHealthPodcast #MFN #DrugPricing #MarketAccess

A promising drug can have market potential and still not fit a company's current commercial team or portfolio. Eric Lindquist explains that Pfizer made this assessment of gedatolisib (Revtorpyk) and could still benefit from the drug's success through royalties and milestones. In our latest Vital Health Podcast, Duane Schulthess (@DuaneSchulthess) speaks with Eric about why a large company would license out a potentially profitable drug and how the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) has affected the deal. #VitalHealthPodcast #DrugDevelopment #Biopharma #DrugLicensing

In our recent Vital Health Podcast, Duane Schulthess (@DuaneSchulthess) and Harry Bowen discuss how U.S. policy can influence biotech investment in Europe. They examine the incentive for companies to bring corporate profits held overseas back to the U.S. following the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, and consider how that movement of capital may have affected funding for European biotech. #VitalHealthPodcast #BiotechInvestment #HealthPolicy

Drug development depends on investors being willing to fund the path from research to market. When expected revenues are lower, late-stage projects can become less attractive to finance. For Europe, this raises questions about how pricing policy affects the funding available to turn research into medicines for patients. In this episode of the Vital Health Podcast, Duane Schulthess (@DuaneSchulthess) and Harry Bowen examine Europe's early- and late-stage venture capital funding relative to the U.S. and discuss what those historical trends could mean for investment and research infrastructure. Most Favored Nation (MFN) pricing ties U.S. medicine prices to lower prices in selected foreign markets. If a lower price abroad also reduces revenue in the U.S., companies may become less willing to accept that price or to introduce a medicine in that market at all. That could turn a pricing policy into an access problem for patients. In this episode of the Vital Health Podcast, Duane Schulthess (@DuaneSchulthess) and Harry P. Bowen discuss how MFN could change pricing negotiations, launch decisions, and the availability of new medicines. What can Europe's experience with price controls tell us about the debate over most-favored-nation (MFN) drug pricing? In our latest Vital Health Podcast, Duane Schulthess (@DuaneSchulthess) and Harry Bowen examine how pricing rules can influence where medicines launch, how investors assess future returns, and where pharmaceutical research takes place. The conversation looks beyond the price itself to the incentives, uncertainty, and policy trade-offs that shape innovation.
