Aside from TFT screens, e-paper displays are proper efficient for extremely low -power applications where refresh rate is low or data doesn’t change too often. We have built two projects this year for e-paper displays. Reach out if you have a low-power project needing it.

The schematic is done, the chip is chosen, the documentation has been read (several[100s] pages of datasheets) . . . Go to source them, turns out said chip is NRND (not recommended for new designs) and is at end of life. And since we might have to source several hundred of these chips for this solution, it is a no-go. Back to design, schematic. Good thing is that the difference is not too much but still..fts

Interestingly enough we have worked on the most display projects this year. Working on a product too.

This Mashujaa holiday, as we honor the great people who have been instrumental in our country, I am working on an update for the QuePay device for Pool Tables. This is based on improvements we want to add and some issues we have noticed both on usability, failure points, user feedback and mass-production readiness. For devices like these where there are several users who interact with them (physically) everyday, rigidity and an ability to withstand abuse have to be factored in. Power (given that sometimes it runs on backup battery) and connectivity (since it is also used in rural areas where mobile network is not as reliable) also become key factors to consider both in firmware and the hardware design.

Now that the hype is died down: It is a shitty concept for a car, cool demo of basically a balloon let loose untied. Selling it to people is just straight up scamming. From a business’ CEO perspective tho, that is genius. I should learn from him.

I need to redesign the QuePay pool table device this weekend. Do proper DFM, make the enclosure more sturdy and the front panel metallic. By the end of the weekend I should have a final design. Starting from PCB, then case then enclosure. Time to cook!!

This e-paper display project we have been working on was meant to be the quickest work we did. And then issues started, from shipping components to simply not working. Code tested on a dev board we had, works okay, tested on the main PCB, nothing. We eventually got it working tho, but boy was it frustrating. That is the problem with hardware though, you introduce another point of failure to normal software development. Except in this case that single point of failure is a folder within which are components (resistors, capacitors, MCUs, connectors etc) We’ve ever had an issue with a batch of resistors, assembled about 10 boards and the yield was 0, none worked. Can you imagine even considering that it could be a resistor. It is always the QFNs and other chips that are the culprits, hardly the passives.
