Foundational Engineering Spotlight: Joule ⚡🔥⚙️ The meticulous experimenter who proved heat is a form of energy and established the mechanical equivalent of heat. James Prescott Joule showed that energy is conserved and quantified the relationship between work and heat. Born in 1818 in Salford, England, to a wealthy brewing family, Joule was largely self-taught in science while managing the family business. He conducted precise experiments in a home laboratory. He measured the heat produced by electric current (Joule’s law) and, through carefully designed paddle-wheel experiments, determined the mechanical equivalent of heat. His work, initially dismissed, became foundational to the first law of thermodynamics when combined with the insights of Kelvin and others. Joule collaborated with Kelvin on the Joule-Thomson effect. He died in 1889. The SI unit of energy, the joule, is named after him. His precise measurements made energy conservation a quantitative science. Every calculation of efficiency in engines, motors, and power systems rests on Joule’s foundation. No university chair. No large laboratory. Just obsessive accuracy and the refusal to accept vague theory. Joule proved that careful measurement by one determined mind can establish the laws of nature.

Sad this is how a legacy dies.
The last game BioWare ever made.

They chased some of the worst trends in the gaming industry. They bloated their budgets and staff and started developing garbage. All this was preventable.

Coming home from space means hitting the air at about 25,000 mph. That's hot enough to melt any metal we've got. The fix? A shield built to burn. It chars and flakes off, taking the heat with it. Every astronaut who's ever come home rode back on a shield that was literally on fire.

Fallout 4 is 11 years old and just got a brand new quest. For free. A fan mod team built it with Bethesda's blessing, and they got the original voices of your character back for the first time since launch. Modders out here doing sequel work. Fallout Day is Friday. pushsquare.com/news/2026/10/…

Steam Next Fest has over 8,000 free demos this week. That's about double June. Here's the catch: more than 1 in 3 of the featured games admit they used AI to make them. In June it was about 1 in 5. And that only counts the ones that said so. Sakurai was right. Somebody still has to care. partner.steamgames.com/doc/m…

Engineer rule: ship it, then fix it in the field. CD Projekt Red took that a little too literally in 2020. But six years later they're still showing up with free updates. Cyberpunk 2.5 lands Thursday with dual-wielding. Dec 2020 me would not believe this. press.cdprojektred.com/en/ne…

Can't find an RTX 5090 to buy? Neither can São Paulo's airport. Two pallets of them, about $470K worth, arrived at Guarulhos and vanished. The distributor still has no answers. First 5090 I've seen sell out before it reached a store.

Every car in @beamng is basically a ball-and-stick toy. Hundreds of little weights tied together by invisible springs. Hit a wall and each spring stretches, stays crumpled, or snaps. The game redoes that math 2,000 times a second. That's why the crashes look so real. It just hit PS5 for $24.99. beamng.com/game/about/physic…

Nintendo just admitted a 28-year-old game caught it off guard. Ocarina of Time remake pre-orders are maxing out in some countries, and the gold Zelda Switch 2 sold out almost instantly. Nintendo's Latin America boss called it "a global phenomenon" and said they "underestimated how well it would be received." nintendoeverything.com/ninte…

Early jet airliners basically strapped fighter engines to a tube. Loud. Thirsty. Great at Mach 2, awful at getting you to Ohio. The fix? Bolt a giant fan on the front and let most of the air go around the engine instead of through it. That one idea is why you can fly cross-country for less than a concert ticket.

Everyone's roasting how GTA 5 looks next to the GTA 6 trailer. Remember what it was built for. GTA 5 came out in 2013 on a PS3 with 512MB of memory. Total. The PS5 has 16GB. That's 32 times more room. GTA 5 isn't ugly. It's a whole city squeezed into a shoebox.

Every engineer has had a bad boss. Few had one as historic as William Shockley. He co-invented the transistor, then drove 8 of his engineers to walk out at once. They founded Fairchild, which led to Intel and most of Silicon Valley. Worst manager. Best accidental founder.

Without assimilation the preceding culture will vanish only to replaced by another, lesser culture. You are at war and dont realize it because you've been demoralized into helping our enemy while believing you are doing good.

The memory alone in the PS6 may now cost Sony more than a whole PS5 sells for. A well-known leaker says the RAM and SSD come to over $680 per console, because AI data centers keep pushing memory prices up. That's before the chip that actually runs the games. $999 is starting to look like the optimistic price. overclock3d.net/news/misc/ps…

The Yakuza studio's next game lets you live one guy's whole life, 1915 to 1965. He stows away on a ship from America, lands in a Japanese steel town, and finds the same life he ran from. Five eras, five cities. Out Jan 15. RGG doesn't do small. youtu.be/mo3QZshU5HQ?si=WwEb…

Someone bought a new Ryzen on Amazon and got an old Intel chip wearing an AMD lid. Likely scam: swap the lid, reseal the box, return it. Amazon resold it as new. The giveaway is the bottom. Flip your CPU over before it goes in the socket.
A redditor has reported a very strange Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 from Amazon. He compared two CPUs that were both sold and shipped by Amazon and arrived in sealed boxes. The older 9950X3D2 has the expected gold contact layout underneath, while the newer one has a noticeably different layout with a large section missing. At first, this could look like a newer revision of the chip. But there’s a much bigger problem. The newer CPU reportedly appears to have an Intel-style substrate underneath the AMD heat spreader. The layout and components don't match a genuine AM5 Ryzen processor. The suspected explanation is a CPU return scam: someone may have removed the heat spreader from a real 9950X3D2, attached it to an older Intel CPU, and returned it to Amazon. The buyer says both CPUs were sealed, which makes the case even more concerning.

The guy who built the PlayStation around a CD now says wanting discs is a "mentality issue." Meanwhile GTA 6 has no game disc, but its soundtrack comes in a whole stack of vinyl versions. So discs are dead, unless they spin at 33 RPM. videogameschronicle.com/news…

"No offense to Zelda" is a bold thing to say three weeks before Zelda drops. Activision's marketing boss says GTA 6 and the new Call of Duty are the year's two biggest games. Fun catch: the sales survey counts every US gamer, and most of them don't own a Switch 2. videogameschronicle.com/news…
