Every generation is shaped by the opportunities available to the one before it. On National Children’s Day, we reflect on the importance of building communities where families can thrive, livelihoods can
become more sustainable and people have the opportunity to create better
futures for themselves and those who come after them. Through its work with women, youth and communities, WDB Trust contributes to creating stronger foundations for generations to come.

The Female Academic Leaders Fellowship (FALF) honored Mrs. Zanele Mbeki with the FALF Champion: A Life of Transformational Leadership Award. The recognition celebrates her lifelong impact as a Champion for Gender Empowerment —
What comes after?
The truth remains, Empowerment and Employment simply open the door, but sustainability is about what we build beyond that door. The question then becomes How do I turn income into skills, savings,
businesses, assets —
and opportunities that continue to support my family and I beyond the opportunity.

No one gets left behind.
Empowering women means recognising that every generation matters. From older women building stronger livelihoods, to young women creating their own opportunities, and young girls who can benefit from the stronger families and communities around them.
When we invest in one woman, the impact can reach far beyond her — creating pathways for those who come after her.

Why we began? Why we continue.
Since its inception in 1991, WDB Trust was established in response to a reality that could not be ignored: women made up the majority of people living in poverty and often experienced its effects more acutely.
The response was to invest in women’s development, create opportunities and strengthen the organisations working to advance women’s lives. 35 years later, that purpose remains at the heart of WDB Trust.
Why we began still matters. And so does the work ahead.

You do not have to wait until you are older to make a difference. Young people are already solving problems, creating opportunities and showing up for their communities. Sometimes all it takes is the determination to begin—and the opportunity to keep going.

A woman’s voice can influence a household. A group of women can influence a community. And when African women are heard, their ideas can help shape the future we all share. The question is not whether women have something to say—
it is whether we are creating enough space to listen.
