On April 15, 1991, the Royal Commission issued its findings on Aboriginal Deaths in Custody and made over 300 recommendations.
Many of these recommendations have not been implemented, and since 1991, at least 630 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have died in custody.

Tonight and over the coming days, we are holding the Jewish community close.
For the 8 nights of Chanukah, Jewish families around the world fill their windows with light - something that has been passed down through generations.
Tonight, I am lighting a candle in solidarity with the Australian Jewish community.
Because when antisemitism and hate rears its ugly head, we donโt shy away.
We will confront the darkness with light. Together.
You, Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light. Psalm 18: 28 #Bondi

As Alexis and I settle in to light our first Hanukkah candles as a married couple, our hearts ache in the aftermath of two mass shootings - one at Brown University, and another at a Jewish gathering at Bondi Beach in Sydney. The latter was yet another horrific terrorist attack in which Jews were targeted solely because they were Jewish.
As we light our menorah tonight, we hold the victims and their families close. We are praying for those who are injured, mourning those whose lives were taken in such senseless violence, and grieving with communities shattered by hate.
Alexis is Jewish, and I am Christian. Together, and alongside people of faith across the world, we share a painful truth: horrific things do happen. Darkness does come. Wretched evil does exist.
The violence of this weekend is meant to strike fear into the hearts of those who will kindle their menorahs tonight. Religious violence is rising, and antisemitism, both here in the United States and around the world, including in Australia, is surging in particularly horrific and too often violent ways.
But Hanukkah calls us to resist fear.
Happy Hanukkah. May the spirit of this holiday - the improbable victory of the Maccabees, and the oil that burned for eight nights - inspire us now.
Perhaps the true miracle of Hanukkah is that more than 2,000 years later, despite horrors, pogroms, the Holocaust, and ongoing hatred, the Jewish people still create light. Still make latkes. Still spin dreidels. Still sing defiant songs of joy. Still gather, still love, still hope.
Each time we choose light over darkness, we become part of the ongoing miracle of Hanukkah.
From our new family to yours, we wish you a meaningful and joyful Hanukkah. And we hold you in our prayers for peace.

We all know jobs for mates is a massive problem in Australian politics.
A new independent report accuses the major parties of patronage & nepotism then lays out a clear way to end jobs for mates and restore public trust.

๐ Halloween brings out the best (and worst) of our imagination - from vampires to werewolves - but you donโt have to look to the supernatural for nightmares. Nature has plenty of its own.
This spooky season, letโs celebrate natureโs freakiest animals - like horned lizards that squirt blood from their eyes or dementor wasps that turn cockroaches into the living dead.
But far scarier than the most bizarre animals is the toll Halloween takes on the environment, particularly the surge in single use plastics for decorations, costumes and lollies.

A massive study on the effects of social class tested 35 hypotheses in 4 countries (N = 33,536).
Only 50% of prior findings replicated.
Hypotheses based on differences between social class contexts in terms of constraints, uncertainty and status were well supported across countries and measures.
Hypotheses based on models positing social class differences in psychological orientations towards โthe selfโ versus โothers and the environmentโ received less support.
In short, the social psychology literature on social class did not replicate. The hypotheses about class from other fields largely held up. nature.com/articles/s41562-0โฆ

Here is the speech that The National Press Club of Australia censored: "The Betrayal of Palestinian Journalists" โ not brought to you by Raytheon, BAE Systems, Thales, Deloitte, Amazon Web Services or Mastercard, all of whom are sponsors of the National Press Club and are embedded in the Israeli economy and/or war machine.
In it, I detail the access-based journalism and pro-Israel bias that pervades the mainstream media and has betrayed Palestinian journalists. While these Palestinian reporters sacrifice their lives to tell the truth, the Western press's careerist plague has shaped its reporting throughout the genocide โ even now.

A caribou mother cradles her newborn protectively in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
This has been their territory since the late Pleistocene, but today the Trump Administration announced plans to auction off these treasured lands to oil and gas leasing.
This means the entire 1.56 million-acre coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge will be opened to: airstrips, roads, thumper trucks, drilling rigs, noise, pollution and pipelines โ destruction of one of the last refuges for wildlife on Earth.

Exposure to individual solutions does not weaken belief in the need for structural change! Read the paper here:

We find the same thing with climate change and public health across multiple massive global datasets (with evidence from 67 countries)
Individual and systemic solutions are largely seen as complementary, not competing. And a higher willingness to act individually is often associated with stronger support for systemic change. We find the correlation is quite high!
Let's please stop saying the opposite because it can dramatically undercut individual and collective action. In fact, individual actions can inspire systemic change--especially if people come to identify with the cause: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3764โฆ

Calling all citizen scientists ๐ฆ, next week is your chance to get out in nature and take part in this yearโs Aussie Bird Count.
Running from 20-26 October, the count gathers crucial data on our countryโs unique bird species, tracking which birds are thriving and which may be under threat.
In Australia, government investment in the monitoring of both threatened and common bird species has many big gaps, making the data that is collected by citizens extra valuable for scientists and conservation programs.

Does AI improve or undercut academic scholarship?
Using AI increases both the quantity & quality of academic scholarship and reduces inequality:
-Researchers using AI published 36% more papers
-There is also rise in the journal impact factor of adoptersโ publications
-GenAI also helps level the playing field in academia. The strongest productivity gains appear among: Early-career researchers + Authors from non-English-speaking countries arxiv.org/pdf/2510.02408
