Traveler. I follow roads where thought forgets its map. In foreign corners, silence speaks, knowledge wakes, and something within me arrives before I do.

Mid-Journey โ€” Years ago, in graduate school, I studied travel and mobility. But the research was never only theoretical. I was also traveling โ€” watching how movement, borders, and small encounters shape ordinary lives. Those thoughts slowly became small fragments on Twitter. Each one began with the same words: ๆ—…ใฎ้€”ไธŠ โ€” Mid-Journey. There were 365 of them. In 2023 they became a small book. Now I am walking that road again, turning those fragments into poems โ€” one each day until December 31. 365 fragments of a road.

#vss365 #Start ๏ผˆๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชž็‰ˆใฏไธ‹ใซ๏ผ‰ Mid-Journeyโ€”โ€” I lost my way in the narrow streets of Fez, where copper lanterns swayed above the stalls and the scent of mint mingled with dust and afternoon heat. An old man opened a blue wooden door and invited me inside. We shared no language, only a small brass tray and two glasses of steaming tea. He did not ask where I came from. I did not ask where the road would lead. We simply watched the mint leaves unfold in the amber water. I had thought understanding must start with words. #vss365 #travel ๏ผˆๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชž็‰ˆใฏไธ‹ใซ๏ผ‰ Mid-Journeyโ€”โ€” somewhere between Vienna and Prague, our night train stopped at a station half-buried in snow. Beneath a solitary yellow lamp, an elderly woman straightened her husband's scarf. He took the paper bag from her hands and brushed the snow from her sleeve. No grand gesture, no words I could hearโ€”โ€” only the quiet tenderness of two people who had learned each other's smallest needs. Inside the carriage, strangers slept. As the train pulled away, their shadows remained joined upon the snow. Travel had taught me how to leave. ๐Ÿ“ข A Note to My Poetry Friends Lately, some of my replies seem to vanish somewhere between my page and yours. They remain visible on my profile, but not always beneath the words they answer. So if my voice is missing beneath your poem, please don't mistake it for indifference. I'm still here on the journey, reading with gratitude, carrying your words with me, and hoping mine will find their way to you. Some messages, perhaps, must travel a longer road. ๐ŸŒ™

#vss365 #Miles ๏ผˆๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชž็‰ˆใฏไธ‹ใซ๏ผ‰ Mid-Journeyโ€”โ€” after two hundred miles of desert and wind, a gas station appeared beneath a flickering OPEN sign. The pumps stood silent. Inside, an old radio sang through a veil of static. A woman in a faded yellow apron set a chipped blue mug before me. Behind the counter, a little girl was drawing a house on the back of a receiptโ€”โ€” a porch, two chairs, a crooked figure in one, and a yellow light above the door. "How far are you going?" the woman asked. Through the dusty window, I could see my car, its windshield pale with desert dust, its nose pointed down the highway like a creature trained to leave. "I don't know," I answered. She smiled and filled my cup again. For a while, neither of us spoke. The radio played a song I almost remembered. When I finally drove away, the station dwindled in my mirror until its light became another star above the darkening desert. But for miles afterward, I kept seeing the little girl's drawingโ€”โ€” the porch, the yellow light, the second chair, and the man who might have sat there, watching the desert turn to night while the miles went on without him.

Beyond the glass, aircraft moved through the rain like ships searching for a shore. Across from me, a father held his sleeping daughter. One small hand rested against the collar of his coat. Whenever an announcement sounded, he gently covered her ear without waking her. Above us, the departure board changed the names of distant cities as though the world were rearranging its possibilities. I wondered where they were going, what ordinary mornings awaited themโ€”โ€” a kitchen fragrant with fresh bread, a little coat hanging by the door, her sleepy voice calling him from another room. Then their flight was announced. He rose without waking her, carrying a whole world that did not yet know it was being carried. My own flight left an hour later. And somewhere above the clouds, a thousand miles from that quiet gate, I saw in the dark window the reflection of my empty armsโ€”โ€” still curved around the life I had never held.

#vss365 #Miles ๏ผˆๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชž็‰ˆใฏไธ‹ใซ๏ผ‰ Mid-Journeyโ€”โ€” in a basement jazz club in Montrรฉal, snow blurred the street-level windows while a muted trumpet held a blue note as though unwilling to let it go. Amber light trembled in half-empty glasses. Across the narrow aisle, a woman in a dark green coat slipped a train ticket between the pages of a worn paperback. When the music stopped, our eyes met. For a moment, the few steps between our tables seemed farther than all the miles that had brought me there. I could have asked where she was going. Perhaps we would have talked until the bartender turned out the lights, then walked together through the snow, inventing a city in which we might have belonged. But the drummer lifted his brushes. The trumpet began again. She lowered her eyes. And I remained where I was. Outside, I walked for miles through streets erased by falling snow. By morning, every footprint had disappearedโ€”โ€” except the few I had never taken.

#vss365 #doubt ๏ผˆๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชž็‰ˆใฏไธ‹ใซ๏ผ‰ Mid-Journeyโ€”โ€” above the last stand of pines, the path narrowed between pale rocks. Each step sent a little gravel sliding downhill; the air smelled of resin and cold stone. I knelt to retie my boot and noticed a fossilized seashell embedded in the rock, its delicate ridges opening like a fan. I ran my thumb along them. Fine dust gathered beneath my nail; for a moment, I almost expected the scent of salt. Far below, clouds drifted through the ravines, curling around the dark shoulders of the mountains like a tide returning to an ancient shore. My map called this place land, but the stone remembered the sea. I looked from the fossil to the distant peaks, wondering how many oceans had risen and vanished before these mountains learned to touch the sky. I began to doubt the borders we draw between what is gone and what remains. Then the wind passed through the mountain grass. One blade bent, then another, until the whole hillside answered in long, quiet waves.

ใฎ้€”ไธŠ365 ๏ผˆๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชž็‰ˆใฏไธ‹ใซ๏ผ‰ Mid-Journeyโ€”โ€” at dusk I passed beneath the arch, still carrying home in the way I looked. A woman took the washing in. Someone called a child indoors. The stones held the day's last warmth, worn smooth by footsteps not my own. I searched for something familiar, some sign that I might belong. Then I let the search fall silent and allowed myself to remain a stranger. A latch clicked. Two neighbors lingered. A lamp came on behind a curtain. Nothing here was meant for me; nothing was too small to matter. This road was new only to my feet. Others had carried bread and sorrow along its bends, had hurried home through rain, had grown older between one return and the next. Your door was smaller than I imagined, its brass bell dulled by years of rain and countless hands. I stood there with the old ticket, creased like a map of all the places I had been afraid to go. Then the door opened. A thread of silver caught the morning light beside your temple. You looked at my face, then at the faded curve on the ticket in my hand. For a moment, the years stood quietly between us. Then you crossed them. Your hand found mineโ€”โ€” without hesitation this time. Behind you, a kettle began to sing. I had come looking for the source of all the roads I had taken. You stepped aside and made room for me in the morning.

#vss365 #doubt ๏ผˆๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชž็‰ˆใฏไธ‹ใซ๏ผ‰ Mid-Journeyโ€”โ€” inside a ruined temple, afternoon light entered through a broken arch, catching dust above the restorer's table. A cup of cloudy water stood beside her brushes; grains of fallen plaster lay on the cloth. She leaned toward a face worn almost smooth. Only one eye had survived, and the faint line where a smile might have been. With the tip of a brush, she followed the edge of a missing cheek, then stopped, as if listening. A bead of water spread into the plaster. For a breath, the old pigment deepened; a shadow gathered at the corner of the mouthโ€”โ€” not quite a smile, not quite its absence. I began to doubt where the ancient painter's hand ended and hers began. She lifted her brush, and in the narrow space between its bristles and the wall, centuries seemed to hold their breath. When she touched the plaster again, the distance between those two hands narrowed to the width of a single brushstroke.

Strangers spoke in rhythms I could neither follow nor dismiss; even silence kept a different time. I tried to walk in my old measure, but each unfamiliar pause made room for something I had never heard. I listened without knowing where the next beat would fall. When I returned east, the streets were where I had left them. The same doors, the same passing faces, the same familiar beat beneath my feet. Yet within its steady measure other rhythms roseโ€”โ€” a hesitation in a stranger's voice, a face I had passed without seeing. The measure had never changed.
