🐾 MEET OUR NEW NEIGHBOURS 🐾
This lovely group of adult dogs and puppies lives just outside our new temporary shelter, close to the surrounding warehouses.
The puppies’ mother, Evie, has been brought into our clinic so she can be spayed. Meanwhile, our team has started feeding the entire group twice every day.
Over the coming days and weeks, they will all receive:
🐾 Vaccinations
🐾 Microchips
🐾 Deworming treatment
🐾 Flea and tick treatment
🐾 Any additional veterinary care they need
Once they have been fully assessed and treated, we hope the warehouse owners will allow us to provide shelter for them and continue feeding them twice daily in the area they already know as home.
Although we would love to bring every one of them inside, we must be realistic about the limited space available at the new shelter. Relocating our existing dogs will already be incredibly stressful for them, and introducing an entirely new group at the same time could create even more anxiety and disruption.
Our preferred solution is therefore to help these dogs remain safely in their familiar territory while ensuring they receive food, shelter and veterinary care.
Whatever happens, we will make sure they are looked after. They are now part of the growing number of animals relying upon War Paws. 💛
Louise celebrates her 54th birthday in one week, and her birthday fundraiser has already exceeded its original £540 target—thank you so much!
However, it would absolutely make her birthday if we could break the £1,000 barrier. If you are considering making a donation this week, Louise would be thrilled if you donated through her birthday fundraiser below.
Every donation will help us care for dogs like Evie, her puppies and their adult companions while we continue preparing for the enormous shelter move ahead.

🐾 NEW SHELTER UPDATE! 🐾
This video was taken at our new temporary shelter site this morning, and after everything it has taken to reach this point, seeing this progress feels incredible.
For almost two months, we have attended meeting after meeting to agree the land allocation. We have also spent countless hours working with engineers and contractors, repeatedly adjusting our plans to keep costs as low as possible without compromising the dogs’ safety.
Today:
🐾 The entire site is finally fenced
🐾 A contractor is building the frame that will support our clinic
🐾 An engineer is marking out every section ready for construction
There is still an enormous amount of work ahead, but the empty land is finally beginning to resemble our dogs’ future home. 💛
Erbil has experienced more rain than we would normally expect at this time of year. We have everything crossed for a few dry weeks so progress is not delayed—we desperately need to be ready to move very soon.
Unfortunately, construction is not our only challenge.
Yesterday, we explained that everyday shelter essentials have increased by at least 9%.
Today, we replenished the drinking water for our staff. Last month, a 17-litre bottle cost 1,700 IQD. Today, the same bottle costs 2,000 IQD—an increase of almost 18%.
Individually, these increases may appear manageable, but together they are placing enormous pressure on our already stretched budget.
Please consider starting a small monthly donation. Just £2, $2 or €2 may not feel like much, but when many people give that amount every month, it creates reliable income that helps us feed the dogs, provide veterinary care and keep the shelter operating.
Thanks to your incredible efforts, War Paws has climbed into 3rd place on the @MyGivingCircle leaderboard! 🎉
We still have a long way to go to reach 1st place and hold it until the end of December, so please keep voting every week and donating whenever you can.

🐾 HUNDREDS OF DOGS ARE COUNTING ON US TO MAKE THIS WORK 🐾
These are just a few of our outside dogs enjoying their dinner.
We have to admit that we are deeply worried about what will happen when we relocate them to the new shelter—and we have good reason to be.
We have secured a large area for the dogs, but one condition of using the land is that the entire site must be fenced. On the positive side, this means the dogs will finally be safely contained and we will always know where they are.
However, it also means they will lose the freedom to roam and scavenge for additional food. Once they move, they will depend entirely upon us to fill their stomachs every single day.
At the same time, the recent devaluation of the Iraqi dinar has caused the price of many essential items to rise by at least 9%—and some increases have been far greater.
A 50kg bag of lentils that last month cost approximately $54 now costs more than $70. That is just one ingredient used to prepare the huge quantities of nutritious food our dogs need each day.
Month end is approaching, which means it is nearly time to replenish our food supplies. With rising prices and more dogs becoming completely dependent upon us, we could soon be spending at least 50% more just to ensure every dog continues receiving enough food and a balanced diet.
We are beyond worried. Relocating the dogs safely is only part of the enormous challenge of relocating the shelter—we must also be able to continue feeding them once we have moved.
Please consider donating through @MyGivingCircle this weekend. Every donation helps fill hungry stomachs and also gives War Paws additional votes in the current funding round.

🐾 HERMAN, SEBASTIAN AND THE PROFESSOR GOT THEIR FREEDOM! 🐾
Herman, Sebastian and the Professor have been living inside the shelter with us for quite some time.
Herman was originally brought in after becoming extremely sick. Once he began recovering, we brought his siblings inside too so we could carefully reintroduce the three of them, have them neutered and prepare them for their eventual release.
Today, all three are doing exceptionally well. They have grown into big, strong and healthy pups—and after discussing their future for several days, this evening we decided they were ready to be released. 💛
They are settling into an area beside the cabins where some of our staff live, so they will be surrounded by familiar faces and remain under their watchful eyes.
The pups have shelter, fresh water and plenty of space to explore. They will continue receiving three meals every day, and our team will monitor them closely while they adjust to their new freedom.
Releasing them is not the end of our responsibility towards them. Herman, Sebastian and the Professor will remain part of the War Paws family, receiving the food, care and protection they need.
It was wonderful—and a little emotional—to watch them begin exploring their new surroundings this evening. After everything Herman endured and the time all three spent inside, seeing these big, healthy pups enjoying their freedom is a very special moment 🐶🐶🐶💛

🐾 SHALAN NEEDS SOME ANSWERS 🐾
Shalan is one of Ashti’s adopted dogs, but sadly she has not been doing well for some time.
Despite not eating large amounts, she has gained a significant amount of weight. She is constantly lethargic, has very little energy and is losing her hair.
Her symptoms could indicate Cushing’s disease or hypothyroidism, but specialist blood testing is needed before we can make a diagnosis and begin the correct treatment.
Unfortunately, the required tests are not available in Iraq, so Shalan spent the day in our clinic yesterday. Our veterinary team performed basic chemistry and haematology tests and carried out a low-dose dexamethasone suppression test, which required blood samples to be collected at carefully timed intervals throughout the day. Samples from that test will now be sent to the UK for analysis, along with a sample to test for hypothyroidism.
We are hopeful that the results will come back quickly and finally give us the answers we need. Once we know exactly what is wrong, we can begin the appropriate medication and hopefully help Shalan regain her energy, reach a healthier weight and grow back her beautiful coat.
For now, she is receiving plenty of care and love while we wait. Please keep beautiful Shalan in your thoughts and send her lots of positive wishes. We will update you as soon as we know more. 🐶💛

🐾 DO YOU REMEMBER CHANCE? 🐾
Chance is one of our long-term dogs who originally lived outside in the driveway.
Long before he found his way to War Paws, both of his back legs had been broken and left untreated. By the time he reached us, the bones had already fused in place.
Despite this, Chance always preferred living outside. He knew the driveway as his home, enjoyed his freedom and managed to get around remarkably well.
Earlier this year, however, the area available to our outside dogs began shrinking rapidly as construction took over more of the land. Chance started struggling to navigate the increasingly difficult terrain, so we made the decision to bring him inside.
We were not sure how he would adapt after spending so long outdoors—but Chance has surprised us in the loveliest way. 💛
Over the past few months, he has discovered that he absolutely loves playing with the smaller dogs—and, as you can see, he completely adores little Tito!
Tito certainly keeps him entertained, and it is wonderful to see Chance playing, engaging and enjoying himself despite everything his poor legs have endured.
Chance will remain safely inside with War Paws now. When we relocate, he will move with us to the new shelter, where he can continue playing with Tito and his other little friends to his heart’s content.
Seeing him so happy reminds us that sometimes an unexpected change can lead to something truly wonderful.
Chance may have damaged legs, but there is absolutely nothing broken about his spirit. 🐶🐾💛

🐾 CATCHING UP WITH OUR OUTSIDE DOGS 🐾
Louise spent some time catching up with the dogs living outside the shelter—and very soon, we will face the enormous task of persuading them all to follow us to the new site!
Some of the dogs have already started accompanying our team when we visit the temporary shelter to check on construction progress. It is almost as though they know that something important is happening and want to inspect their future home for themselves. 💛
However, we know it will not be that easy with every dog.
These dogs have lived around our current shelter and driveway for years. They know every corner, every resting place and exactly where to wait at feeding time. Convincing them to leave familiar territory and follow us somewhere new will take patience, careful planning and probably plenty of food.
Some will happily follow our vehicles and staff—but others will inevitably give us the runaround on moving day! 😂
Our team will do everything possible to ensure that every War Paws dog is moved safely. We refuse to leave them behind simply because they live outside the shelter walls. They are part of our family, and their future matters too.
We have secured temporary land, but we still urgently need funds to rebuild the shelter, prepare the site and relocate hundreds of animals safely.
Please keep donating and sharing our posts and fundraising links. Every donation and every share brings us closer to making this enormous—and sometimes seemingly impossible—move happen.

🦸♂️ ARE OUR STAFF SECRETLY SUPERHEROES? 🦸♀️
Every day at the War Paws shelter is busy—and this video offers just a glimpse of how much our incredible team accomplishes.
Their daily jobs include preparing food, feeding the dogs, cleaning kennels, pools and the clinic, filling water buckets, repairing beds, restocking the food room, guiding deliveries, dealing with the septic truck, brushing dogs and responding to whatever unexpected problem appears next.
Sometimes, we genuinely wonder whether they are wearing Superman outfits beneath their normal clothes!
The shelter and its occupants are a living, breathing thing. No two days are ever the same, and carefully made plans can change within minutes when an animal needs urgent help, something breaks or another delivery arrives.
Much of our team’s work happens quietly behind the scenes, but every repaired kennel, clean pool, full water bucket and prepared meal makes an enormous difference to the animals depending upon us.
Our staff may not wear capes, but they are superheroes to us. We could not be prouder or more grateful to have such a dedicated team keeping War Paws moving through the busiest days, the hardest days and all the organised chaos in between. 🐶🐾💛
🚨 TODAY IS THE FINAL DAY TO NOMINATE WAR PAWS! 🚨

🐾 YESTERDAY WAS A SPECIAL DAY FOR JOLENE—IT WAS HER RELEASE DAY 🐾
When Jolene arrived at War Paws, her legs were tied together and were covered in deep, infected wounds. Yesterday, after weeks of treatment and care, those wounds had healed, she had gained weight and she was finally strong enough to be released. 💛
Sadly, it had also become very clear that Jolene was never going to feel comfortable around people.
From the day she arrived, her fear told us that she had probably never experienced a kind or positive relationship with humans. Despite our team’s patience and gentle attempts to gain her trust, Jolene remained deeply unhappy in her holding kennel and wanted nothing more than her freedom.
We cannot blame her.
As soon as the kennel door opened, Jolene was delighted to be free. Just as we expected, she immediately took off to find somewhere quiet where she could feel comfortable and safe.
At this stage, we do not know whether we will see Jolene again. Our staff will keep watching for her, and if she returns to the driveway, we will make sure that food is available and continue helping her from the distance she needs.
Of course, it makes us sad that we were unable to gain her trust. We would have loved for Jolene to understand that not every human would hurt her—but loving an animal sometimes means respecting what they are telling you, even when it is not the outcome you hoped for.
Jolene did not want human companionship. She wanted her health and her freedom—and yesterday, we were finally able to give both back to her.
Run free, beautiful girl. We hope life is kinder to you from now on, and we will always be here if you choose to return. 🐶🐾💛

🐾 WILL YOU DONATE YOUR AGE TO HELP OUR DOGS? 🐾
Tody's video, put together by Saroj, shows just some of the many dogs who rely upon War Paws every single day.
Every face represents another hungry tummy to fill, another life to protect and another animal depending upon us for food, clean water, veterinary treatment and a safe place to call home.
Today, we are asking our War Paws family to take part in a simple fundraising challenge:
🎂 Donate your age through My Giving Circle! 🎂
If you are 18, perhaps you could donate £18, $18 or €18. If you are 32, you could donate £32, $32 or €32—or, if that is too much, simply move the decimal point and donate £3.20, $3.20 or €3.20 instead.
You could even donate your dog’s age! 🐶
Whatever amount you choose, your donation will help us feed and care for the hundreds of dogs who depend upon our team. It will also give War Paws valuable additional votes on @MyGivingCircle , helping us climb the leaderboard and compete for the £4,000 prize.
With the enormous cost of rebuilding and relocating our shelter, alongside the daily expense of keeping it running, we need your help more than ever.
So, who is willing to reveal their age for a good cause? Let us know in the comments when you have donated—but you are welcome to keep the number a secret! 😂💛

🐾 AN UPDATE ON GRACE 🐾
Grace was first spotted on the site of our new temporary shelter a few weeks ago.
Although she had already been spayed, she still had non-dissolvable suture material embedded in her healed incision. We also noticed that she was lame on one of her back legs, so after gradually gaining her trust, our team brought her into the shelter for further investigation.
Sadly, the results were not what we had hoped for.
Grace has arthritic changes in one of her back legs, it is possible she has a cruciate ligament injury that has been present for some time. Because Grace will now require daily medication and ongoing monitoring to keep her comfortable, releasing her back onto the streets is no longer an option.
Grace is officially staying with War Paws. 💛
She has now been introduced to Shameless and Littlefoot and will share their section. Everything is still very new to her, so we are giving her plenty of time and space to settle at her own pace.
We hope that over the coming days and weeks, Grace will begin interacting more with her new companions and learn that she is finally somewhere safe—a place where she will receive regular meals, daily medication and all the care she needs.
Grace may have arrived unexpectedly, but she is now part of our family, and we will do everything possible to give her a comfortable and happy future.
Welcome home, beautiful girl. 🐶🐾💛

🐾 MORE DOGS ARE APPEARING AROUND OUR OLD DRIVEWAY 🐾
Louise went for a wander around what remains of our old driveway this morning.
As expected, she found quite a few of our own War Paws dogs resting and exploring among the mounds of earth and rubble. However, she also noticed a significant increase in the number of other dogs gathering in the area.
Many of these dogs have ear tags, so we know they have been spayed or neutered, although they are not War Paws dogs. We also know that a local rescuer comes to feed them several times each week, and we are incredibly grateful that they are not being completely forgotten.
However, this does not lessen our concern about what will happen to them as development of the land continues.
The open space is disappearing rapidly. Areas where these dogs previously rested, found food and lived in loose packs are being cleared and built upon. They do not understand why their territory is vanishing or where they are supposed to go next.
A number of dogs who originally came from other areas have already integrated into our War Paws packs. They now depend upon our team, and when we relocate, those dogs will move with us.
But our new shelter has a limited amount of space.
We simply cannot accommodate the hundreds of additional dogs who continue to be abandoned or displaced in this area. That reality weighs very heavily on us because we see them, we worry about them and we know their future is becoming increasingly uncertain.
We will do everything within our power to help—but we cannot solve this enormous problem alone. Please continue supporting, sharing and talking about War Paws. The more people who understand what is happening here, the greater our chance of securing help for the dogs already relying upon us and those who continue appearing at our gates. 🐶🐾💛

🌈 RUN FREE, BEAUTIFUL BAQUARA 🌈
This morning, our beautiful Baquara crossed the Rainbow Bridge.
Baquara had been part of the War Paws family from the very beginning. She was one of our original shelter dogs, and it is almost impossible to imagine War Paws without her.
As she grew older, Baquara experienced several bouts of pancreatitis. Each time, we feared the worst—but our determined old girl always surprised us. She fought hard, pulled through and returned to the friends and familiar surroundings she loved.
Yesterday afternoon, Dr Ali spent time playing with her in her section. She ate her evening meal and there was nothing to suggest that anything was wrong.
But this morning, everything changed.
It was immediately clear that Baquara was seriously unwell, and she was rushed into the clinic. Our veterinary team quickly discovered that she was bleeding internally. Tragically, there was nothing we could do to save her. The final act of love we could give her was to let her go peacefully and ensure she did not suffer.
Tonight, her dear friends Sheru and Pepper are subdued. They were a closely bonded little pack, and they feel her absence just as deeply as we do.
Our hearts are broken. Baquara had been woven into the fabric of shelter life for so many years. She was loved, she belonged and she will leave an enormous space behind her.
Run free across the Rainbow Bridge, beautiful Baquara. Find the friends who went before you and run once again without pain.
Thank you for every memory, every smile and every year you shared with us.
We will love and remember you always. 🌈🐾💔

🐾 WELCOME TO WAR PAWS, CROM 🐾
On her way to work at the shelter yesterday morning, Malak spotted this poor dog wandering alone.
His body was covered in scabs, he had very little hair remaining and he was scratching relentlessly. It was immediately clear that he desperately needed help, so Malak quickly alerted our veterinary team.
They headed out to find him, but gaining his trust took time. Crom was understandably wary, and Dr Ali had to sit patiently with him until he felt safe enough to allow a leash to be placed around his neck.
Thankfully, that patience paid off.
Crom is now safely inside the shelter and receiving treatment for the severe case of mange that has caused him so much pain and discomfort. For the first time in what may have been a very long time, he has food, medical care and people who will do everything possible to help him recover. 💛
We have named this beautiful boy Crom, and although his skin has a long way to go, we are hopeful that with the right treatment, good food and plenty of care, his transformation will be incredible.
Crom is another reminder that animals in desperate need continue to appear around us—even while we face the enormous challenge of rebuilding and relocating our shelter.
Please keep supporting War Paws. Your donations allow our team to respond when dogs like Crom need us most, and every share helps his story reach more people who may be able to help.
Welcome to the War Paws family, Crom. You are safe now. 🐶🐾💛

🐕 MORE DOGS. MORE HUNGRY MOUTHS. NO MORE MONEY FOR FOOD 🐕
Every feeding time, it feels as though there are more dogs waiting for us.
New dogs are being abandoned in our area every few days, leaving us with an impossible question: how can we feed the dogs already depending on us while ignoring the frightened, hungry dogs who have just been dumped?
We cannot simply turn away.
Previously, many free-roaming dogs survived by eating livestock carcasses dumped nearby. With construction now consuming almost all of that land, this is no longer a reliable food source. More dogs are moving closer to the shelter and relying on War Paws for every meal.
We are already struggling to cover the growing cost of feeding our own dogs. Our team stretches every pound, dollar and euro as far as possible, but we simply do not have the funds to keep increasing the amount of food we provide.
Our operating funds are at rock bottom because every spare penny is being directed towards rebuilding and relocating the shelter. However, while we desperately need to fund the move, the dogs still need food, veterinary care and dedicated staff every single day.
A small monthly donation could make an enormous difference.
If more people committed to giving just a few pounds, dollars or euros each month, it would provide stable income we could plan around. We are not asking a few people to carry this enormous burden—we are asking many people to give one small, affordable amount.
My Giving Circle is a great option for monthly donations. War Paws receives your donation, and we also receive additional votes every month, helping us climb the leaderboard and compete for more vital funding.
Together, your small monthly donations could keep hundreds of bowls full. 🐶🥣💛

💛 A QUIET MOMENT WITH THE DOGS 💛
Apologies if I sound a little down in this video. I am currently nursing my second cold in three weeks and, if I am completely honest, I am feeling rather miserable!
Today, however, I managed to find a little time to sit with Sadie, Sissy, Baron and Krushenka—and it was exactly what I needed. 🐾
Since arriving back in Erbil, I have barely had an opportunity to spend any real quality time with the dogs. The sheer volume of work involved in rebuilding and relocating the shelter has been overwhelming, and every single day seems to bring another new problem that must be solved.
There are endless meetings, quotations, plans and decisions, all while trying to ensure the animals continue receiving the care and attention they need.
It was lovely to simply stop for a while, sit quietly and be with them. No telephone calls, no construction problems and no decisions—just four beautiful dogs, a little peace and a reminder of exactly why we are working so hard. 💛
We also need your continued help on My Giving Circle. If we are going to reach first place by the end of December and win the £4,000 prize, we have some seriously hard work ahead of us!
Please cast your free weekly vote, donate if you can and share our link with your friends and family. Every vote moves us a little closer.

🐾 A FRIDAY UPDATE FROM SECTION 2 🐾
Firstly, thank you for your patience while our social media posts have been few and far between.
Life at War Paws is completely nonstop as we work to rebuild and relocate the shelter. Every day brings another meeting, decision or unexpected job that must be completed before we can safely move hundreds of animals.
Although our updates may be quieter than usual, please know that the work behind the scenes has never been more intense.
This video introduces the long-term residents currently living in our Section 2 medical kennels:
💛 Gaynor recently underwent surgery for a large abscess and is continuing her recovery.
💛 Harriet has a joint problem and remains under our team’s care.
💛 Alfred is undergoing his third round of chemotherapy for TVT.
💛 Bika arrived underweight and is receiving additional meals to help her regain strength.
💛 Bryn and Chickpea are perfectly healthy, but we have not yet been able to find space for them within one of our main sections. For now, they share a Section 2 kennel and come into the airlock every day to run, play and burn off some energy!
As always, we are also asking for your @MyGivingCircle votes this weekend. We have made a good start to the new round and currently sit at number 52 on the leaderboard.
We would love to reach the top 20—or even the top 10—this weekend, and with your help, we genuinely could!
Donations through My Giving Circle also give War Paws additional votes, so if you are already planning to donate, it is a wonderful way to support us. We are still raising money for the shelter relocation while also finding the funds needed to keep the current shelter running every day.
Every vote, donation and share matters enormously. Please help us climb that leaderboard this weekend! 🗳️🐶💙

💛 PLEASE WELCOME GRACE 💛
We first spotted this beautiful girl on the land being prepared for our new temporary shelter last week.
A closer look revealed that she had previously been spayed—but non-dissolvable silk sutures were still embedded in her healed incision. If left in place, these could eventually have caused painful and potentially serious suture abscesses, thankfully they were spotted before this happened and Louise managed to keep her still for long enough to remove them a few days ago.
Our team began visiting and feeding her every day, patiently gaining her trust until she felt safe enough to come closer and it was noticed that she was lame on one of her back legs. Tonight, that patience paid off and she was finally brought inside the shelter. 🐾
She has settled beautifully into one of our quarantine kennels and, most importantly, she now has a very full belly and somewhere safe to sleep.
Over the coming days, Grace as she is now called, will receive a full assessment and X-rays so our veterinary team can determine what is causing the lameness in her back leg.
Grace may have appeared on the land where we are only just starting to build our temporary shelter, but she has already become another life depending on War Paws.
For tonight, she is warm, fed and safe—and that is a very good place to begin. 🐶💛
Please join us in welcoming gorgeous Grace to the War Paws family and send her plenty of love for the days ahead.
