I used to have hedgehogs living in the garden that I would see every night and share photos and videos of regularly: there were at least three different individuals including the named resident female Henrietta.
This was until landlord of the neighbouring property decided to clear their entire garden— all of the trees, all the shrubs, all the bramble, everything was torn up and thrown out.
They also tore down the shared fence between our gardens which had been an old wooden fence covered in ivy, with plenty of gaps for the hedgehogs to pass through. They built a brand new 6ft tall impenetrable fence.
The construction of this fence may seem minor but it means that wildlife like hedgehogs can no longer pass through. The removal of the plants from that garden means that the hedgehogs lost a huge part of their foraging and living area.
I have not seen a single hedgehog in our garden since the neighbour made these changes. I don’t know if it’s because they can’t get in past the new fences, because they were scared away, or possibly because they were killed in the renovations.
I look for Henrietta often and wonder what happened to her. Did she get fenced out of our garden permenantly? Did she get taken away with the branches and leaf litter? Did she get fenced inside the neighbours garden and find herself unable to get back out? I’ll probably never know.
I’ve made some gaps in the new fence now and though I wait for the hedgehogs to return, it has been several months now and I still haven’t seen any.
Hedgehogs are a Red List species in the UK, yet landowners seemingly have no requirement to consider them whatsoever in any renovations they make. I pleaded with the neighbouring landlord (via some very patronising estate agents) to leave some habitat intact. They ignored me.

Most media outlets are now inaccurately reporting my oldest pubs research.
They're taking info from a heavily edited 2 min Insta reel rather than the carefully explained evidence in my book published two years ago.

The far right has stormed a church in Doncaster to confront a priest. How very Christian of them.
They have absolutely no respect for their own place of worship.

We've been getting a lot of questions lately about how the Internet Archive digitizes books.
The short answer: page by page, by hand.
You may remember our viral 2021 video of Eliza Zhang scanning a book. That's still how we do it.
Meet Eliza, and learn how we scan books: blog.archive.org/2021/02/09/…

🤔 I showed a friend this photograph and they said that they wished we had places like this in Britain. It is ! St. Cwyfan's on Anglesey in North Wales is known as Eglwys Bach y Môr – the little church in the sea. A real hidden gem.
Climbed down on practically everything, now delays handing financial records to BBC. Manbaby.

I was in the Essex village I grew up in visiting family this week.
Local MP = Priti Patel.
Migrant population = 0
Same men, same barstools in pub
Same obsession with migrants
Same opposition to new homes in village.
“Local kids can’t get homes because of immigrants” they claim.

Is Google dumb? Or is it evil? Genuine question. The ability to fake satellite imagery with simple prompts was rolled out yesterday to all users & the potential harm is so blindingly obvious, it’s almost as if they’re profit-seeking chaos edgelords who simply don’t give a shit
Tonight I typed just one sentence into Google Earth and put refugees near the Mexican border. Then I planted a nuclear plant in Iran. What on earth is Google doing? Check my latest post here: digitaldigging.org/p/how-to-…

EXCL: George Cottrell transferred $2m to his mother days before her donations to Reform UK.
Sources say Fiona Cottrell told bankers the transfers, received 24-72 hours before her donations to the party, came from her son.
Another important scoop from @Annaisaac

There is no such thing as a ‘senior Reform UK source’. They’re not a ‘source’, they’re either a politician or their spin doctor. Cloaking this nonsense in the language of investigative journalism is an insult to everyone. They should be named or told to shut the fuck up.
Surreal, Newsnight interrupts live TV to report a Reform UK source commenting on the Zack Polanski interview
Zack Polanski responds
Newsnight then read out a comment from another Reform UK source
Newsnight then read out a message from Nigel Farage on social care
Then a few minutes later Newsnight read out the rest of Nigel Farage's message, again criticising social care

A renegade polymath with binoculars and a beard , Bill was invariably funny and occasionally furious . He loved birds and loathed those who harmed them . He was delightfully unpredictable , sparky , smart and at times a bit spiky . Critically he really knew his stuff , and his passion was true - he didn’t just pick up his binoculars on telly , he went birding whenever he could . So he was genuine and that’s why we loved him , he never needed a script , and took scant interest in any he was given . He didn’t like rules and often neglected to play by them . This may have frustrated the serious and the worthy but it always amused his audience - he was an utter joy to be with . I recall finding a Black Woodpecker in a damp Dutch park with him once , he gazed at it intently , sighed , put down his bins , turned to me and just smiled . A massive grin . No words , just a beautiful childlike bliss . That says all you need to know about Bill Oddie .
Sadly we’ve not only lost a goodie , we’ve lost one of the besties .
