“If I Had Told You I Was Jewish, You Probably Wouldn’t Have Become My Friend.” When Palestinian-American neurosurgeon Dr. David Hassan arrived in the United States, one of the first people to extend a helping hand was an American man who became his friend and mentor, guiding and supporting him through important stages of his life and career. But what David didn’t know all those years was that his friend was Jewish. Shortly before his friend passed away, David discovered the truth and asked him, surprised and hurt, “Why didn’t you ever tell me you were Jewish?” His friend’s answer made him reconsider some of his deepest beliefs: “Because if I had told you back then, you probably wouldn’t have become my friend.” David reflected on those words and admitted that his friend was right. A powerful and deeply human story about a friendship that transcended the barriers created by stereotypes and deeply rooted prejudices—and how a simple act of kindness can challenge years of conditioning and transform the way we see others.
