PRESCRIBED BURNS: Are you smelling smoke tonight?
Earlier today, a 279-acre prescribed burn was conducted near Awendaw, per the @ForestryCommish. Due to a developing inversion and a light northeasterly breeze, heavy smoke has moved into parts of the Charleston Metro. #SCWX #Fire

Non-zero chance of a few tornadoes today in Minnesota/Wisconsin with inflated wind profiles and ok low-level thermos. Some issues with stability from cloud cover and a question of if southern Minnesota will fire exists, but otherwise seems decent enough for a few tornadoes.

A strong tornado is on the table today for the MSP region... LLJ is going to carry the setup today, thermos are very marginal. Will an updraft be able to sustain itself? VERY favorable hodo for Sig long track tors if a storm takes advantage (likley pending mergers)

Minor to moderate coastal flooding will return again this morning. Up to 1 ft of saltwater inundation is possible along the southeast South Carolina coast down into the southeast Georgia coast. Never drive around road closure barricades!
TORNADO SEASON BEGINS SOON: Alabama’s tornado season runs from November through May, so we will be in that season in less than one week.
Here's a map that needs a little explaining. It's from Dr. Victor Gensini's group at Northern Illinois University — a 'top ten analogs' map for Week 3, November 10–16. Dr. Gensini is a friend and they do wonderful work at NIU.
Here's what that means: they found the ten past weeks whose large-scale patterns best matched the one expected that week, then plotted where tornadoes happened in those weeks. Each dot is a tornado report from those analog weeks. Red dots are significant tornadoes, EF2 or stronger. Total: 290 tornadoes across the ten weeks, an average of 29 per week, with 39 significant ones.
Notice where they cluster: the Deep South, including right here in Alabama, plus parts of the Midwest. That's the classic fall severe weather setup for “Dixie Alley”.
Important: this is NOT a forecast of 290 tornadoes that week, and it doesn't mean your town gets hit. It's a heads-up: the pattern shaping up for mid-November has historically produced elevated tornado activity in the Southeast. Stay weather-aware as we get into November.

We're only about a week away from the full operational debut of the RRFS and REFS models and the retirement of the NAM, HRW, SREF, and HREF models. Currently working on a video that will discuss what's changing, why NOAA is making these changes, the timeline behind how we got here, and some nuances of the RRFS/REFS that might be useful when forecasting in the future. Stay tuned.

If you want the science behind why the energy releases the way it does, I wrote a longer explainer on auroral substorms as well.
