My heart is heavy today as we mourn the tragic shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend. My deepest prayers and condolences go out to the families, students, educators, and entire Bend community. No parent should ever have to fear sending their child to school. As a School Board Director here in Roseburg, tragedies like this remind me just how sacred our responsibility is to protect the children entrusted to our care. I want to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude to our Superintendent Jared, district administration, school safety/security, School Resource Officers, and everyone who works tirelessly to keep our schools safe. I also want to recognize the wisdom and foresight of our Superintendent and administration in choosing to invest federal ESSER funding into long-term school construction and security improvements rather than using those temporary dollars to fund staffing positions. That was a difficult but responsible decision, and one that will continue protecting our students and staff long after those federal dollars are gone. From secured entrances and controlled access to fencing and other critical safety improvements, these investments matter. We cannot prevent every act of evil, but we have a moral obligation to do everything within our power to protect our children. Steve Hammerson Roseburg School Board Director
