Since it’s Juneteenth, I want to take this time to acknowledge Black disabled people.
We are not as represented in the disabled community and we even face racism in the community. 1/

An aspect of ableism that is rarely discussed is the cavalier nature with which able-bodied people approach our mobility devices. They make ugly jokes about them, they snark about how we use them, and if they get their hands on them they mistreat and break them.

Accessibility isn’t more work, you were just cutting corners before. The work was incomplete.

Please keep your damn masks on even after you get vaccinated. In two months the CDC will back track from these statements in this article. Disabled folks cannot afford for y’all (able bodied) folks to try out this little experiment. Think of other marginalized people for once
BREAKING: U.S. health officials say fully vaccinated Americans don't need to wear masks outdoors anymore unless they are in a big crowd of strangers. apne.ws/ZDhHWKP

The term “special needs” encumbers what are human needs with the burdens of ableism, segregation, devaluation and disability discrimination.
The label of “special needs”burdens disabled people in every aspect of life.
Disabled people have human needs, not special needs.

There are processes in place to grant disabled students access, but those processes all rely on disabled students doing work that other students never have to do. Universities pat themselves on the back for having these processes, but they forget what it takes from us.

I feel like some people are forgetting we all breathe the same air and this is an airborne virus.

Apparently a lot of people have yet to get the message: once you get vaccinated, you still have to practice distancing, wearing masks, etc etc.
This is not the MMR folks. 🤦🏻♀️

A disabled person’s need for access, accommodation, health care, education, housing, employment, transportation and fundamental freedoms and liberties is not a “special need.”

Being 'young' & disabled absolutely sucks. No one takes you seriously, because young people can't get sick! Sitting here with my 3 chronic illnesses & the GP says I'm too young for the vaccine. I go to the hospital regularly for infusions. I don't feel safe.

As March comes I want to acknowledge the disabled, chronically ill, and immune compromised folks who have spent the entire year inside, who have suffered lack of care from health care providers because of the pandemic, &who have been so resilient in a time we shouldn’t have to be

Today is disability day of mourning. I’m mourning the disabled people who didn’t survive this pandemic. I’m mourning the fact that we live in a society that often treats disabled people like afterthoughts. I’m mourning living in a world willing to accommodate everyone but us.

Sarah McSweeney is but one victim of the ableism exacerbated by COVID.
Her story matters so very much, but an entire article justifying why she deserved to live should never have needed to be written in the first place.
Ableism can be a death sentence. npr.org/2020/12/14/945056176…
