Many of us have seen these images. This patient with metastatic cancer was treated with a targeted therapy. 15 weeks later it looked like a miracle cure. But 7 weeks after that, the tumors were back.
This wasn't a failure of the drug. It was a failure of the paradigm. And it's true across the board for our most powerful therapies. The problem is a fundamental mismatch between our drugs, which are static chemistry-based technologies, and cancers, which are dynamic: constantly evolving, constantly mutating.
We're excited to share that our lab has received an @NIH Director's Pioneer Award to build cancer therapies that evolve as fast as the tumors they're fighting.
We are going to build a new class of adaptive therapy at @SylvesterCancer in Miami, targeting pancreatic cancer, glioblastoma and acute myeloid leukemia, three cancers with poor survival and very few options.
It might sound radical, but we've already done it for HIV, and that therapy is now headed to clinical trial. That work was our first Pioneer Award.
Sylvester is the best place to build this new class of anticancer medicines. Its Phase 1 trial unit for experimental therapeutics, and clinicians working alongside scientists, mean a concept can reach patients far faster than in most places. It's also home to some of the world's leading experts in these cancers.
Our mission is to bring this to patients fast, because every extra day means more pain and loss.
Thank you @carlzimmer for profiling our work in the NYTimes.
