...And yet with these beautiful buildings comes the juxtaposition of a more modernized urban and suburban landscape met to meet financial and economic demands over an aesthetic one. Anywhere you live in the world you will most likely find history told in the form of evolving architecture through the decades and centuries. In the case of areas I was raised in, these often came in the form of what many would call urban/suburban hell: endless strip malls encased by endless highways and large streets. If I were to see these for the first time today I would possibly question if there were no better ways to city plan for a more aesthetically pleasing landscape. Yet as a child these were my reality and all that I knew. To me these urbanized areas of our cities helped shape the way I create art: sharp corners, straight edges, monotone/mute colors, harsh lightings/shadows. These buildings however have meaning beyond their appearance, many being independent businesses and home to some of my core memories growing up. From small asian grocery stores and bakeries to small independent tutors and teachers, these are the buildings that shaped my identity; a million and one experiences and memories I hold dear to my heart.
