X is full of people who don’t know what they are talking about !!
This RESET will cost OpenAI $125 Billion.
They have 50m active paying users for ChatGPT, most users spend $200 monthly, which means $50/week on average.
So one reset price is $50/customer.
They provide 50x more usage for the price you pay, so $2500/customer in inference for one week of usage.
That brings total of $125b total for 30m users.
Kudos to OpenAI. Their investors will probably curse them for this.
Companies that have frontier models:
OpenAI
Anthropic
Google
Meta
xAI
Alibaba
DeepSeek
Moonshot AI
Z.ai
Xiaomi
StepFun
…
And many more in close competition.
Convince me Anthropic and OpenAI are worth $2T 😅
The DevDay mess seam to originate from "a small team trying to do a lot of big things, and releasing them improperly and immaturely."
"The Doom of a Star"
The story of Tibo, “The Reset Guy,” is a lesson for many working in this industry. @thsottiaux
He has done a lot of great things, and we appreciate that a lot. But those contributions do not put his decisions and actions-or OpenAI’s-beyond criticism.
He had the potential to become one of the biggest stars on X. But some questionable decisions and actions risk undoing the goodwill that got him there.
Using resets to encourage people and trigger urgency to buy or upgrade to Pro creates expectations. Changing subscription allowances afterward leaves people questioning what they actually paid for. Temporary and unpredictable credits and cheaper models may soften the impact, but they do not replace a clear, reliable offer. When you create expectations, you have to meet those expectations, or you will be a loser.
@OpenAI puts plenty of energy into promoting smarter models and a faster Codex. The limits, costs, and changes to existing subscriptions deserve the same attention. People should not have to piece together replies on X to understand what their money gets them. You should not make people assume there will be weekly resets when you won’t be able to deliver them regularly.
Tibo lost the trust of many when the resets pushed back their scheduled reset times, even when they had not used much of their own quota yet. Weekly reset times moved in a variety of ways, undermining customers’ expectations, while Tibo and other OpenAI employees did not seem to care about it-or worse, it may have been done intentionally.
Tibo and his team offered exciting resets, but then fell short in some other areas: moving reset times, unavailable models, nerfed models, faster-burning quotas, etc. These practices caused a lot of people to lose faith in Tibo and his team.
And announcing allowance changes right before DevDay? That risks making the conversation about what customers are losing instead of the great things being launched. Why undermine your own announcements like that?
This is not all on Tibo. OpenAI is responsible for its decisions and actions, not just the person announcing them.
Getting people to switch from Anthropic is one thing. Giving them a reason to stay is another. Winning attention does not mean winning loyalty, especially when paying users feel the deal keeps changing.
Honesty and goodwill go a long way. The opposite can go even further.
You can reset someone’s quota. You cannot reset their trust.
