Really pleased to see @jeffsmithetc re-elected as our Labour MP with a 13,982 majority.🌹 Grateful to all our members who helped with our successful campaign in Manchester Withington, and also supported a Labour gain for @Tim_Roca in our twinned constituency in Macclesfield too.

Fantastic to attend the opening event for 50 new age-friendly social rent homes on a brownfield site in the heart of Chorlton District Centre. These type of developments are vital for our high streets. 30 of the 50 homes have also gone to those right-sizing from local area.🏡
We are building social rent and genuinely affordable homes in every community across our city that Manchester people need to thrive, like this 100% social rent development in the heart of Chorlton by MSV Housing. Find out more: orlo.uk/EuuIz

We’re offering a route off the streets this Christmas. And we will keep working together to tackle the root causes of homelessness - and end rough sleeping for good.
"This moral mission of ours isn't just for Christmas, we're in it for the long haul." Housing secretary Angela Rayner announces the government's plans to end rough sleeping at a summit in Downing Street. trib.al/97QIFQh 📺 Sky 501

This is a big ambition – we know that. But we won’t back down from making sure everyone has the offer of a route off the streets this Christmas. Today’s summit is about bringing every part of society together behind that mission. We’ll keep working together to tackle the root causes of homelessness and end rough sleeping for good. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c3n0…

Despite the windy conditions, we had lots of teams out campaigning in Chorlton and Chorlton Park today listening to local residents, picking up casework and letting them know what @mcrlabour is doing locally in their area and community. Plenty of support on the doorsteps.🌹

Big news that we are step closer to an Olympic bid for Greater Manchester. A sports mad city already competing on the global stage. The Olympics would be transformative for us and wider the North of England. #olympics #manchester

Everyone deserves a safe, secure home they can be proud of. Today I visited @Shelter to hear directly from their team and social housing campaigners about how we can deliver a new generation of council homes. As we strengthen the Social Housing Bill, we’re putting tenants at the heart of those changes, from protecting survivors of domestic abuse in social housing to giving council tenants more control over repairs and maintenance. Because delivering a new generation of social housing isn’t just about building more homes. It’s about making sure they’re safe, secure and shaped by the people who live in them.

This Labour government’s transformative Renters’ Rights Act empowers private renters to challenge unreasonable rent increases. If a tenant believes a proposed rent increase is above the open-market rent, they can refer the matter to the First-tier Tribunal. In a recent case in Manchester where the Landlord proposed an increase in rent from £1,650 per calendar month to £1,700, the Tribunal determined the open market rent was actually £1,450 per calendar month. We’re standing up for renters and our reforms are working. gov.uk/residential-property-…

The Manchester Evening News is backing a bid to raise £42.5m to build a revolutionary new cancer scanning centre at The Christie. We are calling on people across Greater Manchester and beyond to help fund the new centre at the world-renowned hospital. It would dramatically increase the number of patients that can be examined and provide access to some of the most advanced imaging technology available. At the heart of the plans is a state-of-the-art scanner which will give doctors an unprecedented view of tumours, showing not just where they are but how they move inside the body in real time. The technology could allow medics to target cancer more precisely, reducing damage to healthy tissue and helping patients receive kinder, more targeted treatment. For the first time, clinicians will also be able to carry out some surgical procedures while a patient is being scanned, allowing treatment decisions to be made instantly and targeting tumours more accurately than ever before. The appeal by the hospital's own charity comes after demand for scanning soared. Existing facilities were built in 1980 to treat around 20 patients a day - but it now supports more than 60. This is the Christie Charity most ambitious appeal yet but every donation will help bring the project closer to reality and give thousands of patients access to faster, more advanced scans each year. We have built record numbers of affordable housing in the last year – the most completion since the 1990s – and we're building right across the city. We are also on track to meet our target to build at least 10,000 social rent, affordable and Council homes up to 2032. [1/2]

Prime Minister Andy Burnham paid tribute to councillor Pat Karney, following his sad death at the age of 78. Mr Karney, a councillor for Harpurhey, served the city for almost half a century with pride, humour and commitment. The PM told MPs: "Thank you, Pat, for your contribution to Manchester and to politics in our country". #news #politics #manchester #manchestereveningnews

I’m deeply saddened to hear that Pat Karney has died. Pat gave nearly 50 years of his life to serving Manchester. He saw the city through some of its toughest times and played his part in the growth and transformation that followed. I knew Pat for many years. He loved Manchester deeply and was a tireless champion for the people he represented. I’ll miss him greatly. My thoughts are with his family and everyone who knew and loved him.

So incredibly sad about Cllr Pat Karney’s passing. Pat was an icon, a legend, a special politician over decades in Manchester. He was the face and the voice of our city during our happy times and our sad times. Known for his famous Christmas and Manchester celebrations, he was also a great campaigner and never forgot his roots in working class Manchester. He was a true friend to me and to a generation of others. Pat was a total one-off who will be greatly missed and very fondly remembered for years to come. RIP. I also introduced him to Twitter as it was then - a platform he really enjoyed.
