Even with trade school enrollment rising and technician graduates increasing, the automotive industry is still losing the talent battle and it’s not just a pipeline problem… it’s a leadership and culture problem. The industry needs nearly 1 million new transportation technicians over the next five years, largely to replace retiring or exiting workers not growth. Yet the reality inside many service bays tells a harder story: • Less than half of technicians feel valued by management • 66% say communication from leadership is poor • 70% say there’s no clear career path • 72% say mentoring and training systems are broken At the same time, about 39,000 new technicians graduate annually, while the industry needs roughly 76,000 per year just to stay even, creating a constant talent drain. This isn’t about attracting technicians anymore, it’s about building environments they refuse to leave.
