In Fahrenheit 451, the chief book-burner, Captain Beatty, describes how reading became obsolete because the public demanded increasingly fast-paced entertainments, and those entertainments slowly corroded their ability to think. “Books cut shorter. Condensations. Digests, tabloids. Everything boils down to the gag, the snap ending. Classics cut to fit fifteen-minute radio shows, then cut again to fill a two-minute book column … Many were those whose sole knowledge of Hamlet was a one-page digest in a book that claimed, ‘Now at last you can read all the classics.’ … School is shortened, discipline relaxed, philosophies, histories, languages dropped, English and spelling gradually neglected, finally almost completely ignored. Life is immediate, the job counts, pleasure lies all about after work. Why learn anything save pressing buttons, pulling switches?” In this passage Ray Bradbury foretells the intellectual hollowing out of the working class, the advent of AI-generated “summaries” of classic novels, the attention-frying culture of short-form video, the relaxation of educational standards into non-existence. All of this in a book published in 1953.
Starting to really understand why a core theme of dystopian novels is that nobody reads

Themes in TLIC: Identity Belief about who we are greatly influences how we live. As someone who’s struggled with this, the theme often appears in my work. TLIC is only the beginning of Seth’s growth in this area. I’m excited to keep exploring the topic as the trilogy goes on!

I stumbled across a post by someone who generates their books with AI and they were asking why it's so wrong when they still come up with the ideas and basically still edit and direct the story. And I was going to reply the usual, that AI steals words, sometime verbatim, from books whose authors never consented to their work being scraped. And while that's a really good moral reason to avoid it, I think the better reason is simply that you are cheating yourself. We all started in a place where we have ideas we aren't capable of creating yet. (This goes for artists too). Figuring out how to do those ideas justice is the entire point. Forging a tapestry, word by word. Getting better with every new story. Learning from those who came before us. The act of writing IS the joy. The end result is the icing.

There’s a reason the great dystopian novels envision a world without literacy. Those books warned about the very age we’re now living in. Those who abandon reading & writing are surrendering their powers of thinking. What’s shocking is that so many would surrender so readily.
We're about to enter a period where not reading or writing becomes as ubiquitous as smoking once was. We can hope people will eventually realize this is bad for them, as they did with smoking. But this is far from certain; the cost may not be as obvious.
