🎉 Congrats to EMD’s Shannon Dhindsa (MPH ’25), winner of the Wilbur G. Downs Prize in International Health at YSPH!
Her thesis—based on fieldwork in Tanzania—evaluated a saliva-based glucose test that could transform diabetes care in low-resource settings in the US & abroad.🧪
👏👏👏 Congrats to EMD’s Alyssa Agarwal (BA ’24, MPH ’25), winner of the @YaleSPH Dean’s Prize for Outstanding MPH Thesis!
Her research explored how Plasmodium falciparum invades red blood cells—and how future malaria vaccines can stop it. 🧬🦟
She did much of the work in a remote lab in Kédougou, Senegal, using genomics, structural biology, mathematical modeling, and CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing.
Prof. Amy Bei called her one of the most exceptional students she’s ever mentored!🌟

Welcome back to school, EMD and YSPH students! We're excited to kick off a new semester tackling infectious disease challenges! 😊
Here's a glimpse of how our EMD students are gearing up for another semester of impactful learning. 🎓
MPH student Jiayi Du applies statistical tools to explore how climate impacts the epidemic trends of Japanese encephalitis. Her research aims to develop predictive models that guide public health interventions.

One of the biggest challenges with climate change research is understanding how it actually impacts infectious disease in a quantitative way
This matters for developing policy and legal frameworks on a national and international scale, as well as predicting what might be the next big disease threat to humanity
New faculty member Colin Carlson works on this, and connects research to policy and legal outcomes.

👏👏👏 Thanks to @CTDPH Commissioner & Yale EMD Prof. Manisha Juthani for an inspiring Medical Grand Rounds: From NY to New Haven to Hartford: A Journey from Academia to Public Health. 🌟
She also showed how public health prepares us to tackle new challenges from Mpox to lead poisoning using
📈 Timely surveillance data
🩺 Equitable access to diagnosis, treatment & prevention
🎬 Transparent public health communication
A true call to action !

One of the ways climate change impacts infectious disease is increasing the range that vectors like mosquitos can happily live in
This means that places that previously had no dengue, or only had sporadic outbreaks before, might have dengue transmission year round, significantly increasing cases
PhD student Hailey Robertson studies what conditions must be met for new places to have ongoing dengue transmission so we can prepare for the future
