I've been asked a few times now: when will the Ironwood migration be 'complete'? When will we finally know if there was inflation?
Those aren't the right questions. They miss the entire point of Zcash's turnstile.
100% of Orchard funds will never reach Ironwood. Keys get lost. Dust sits unspendable. Devs leave testing balances. And look at Sprout (2016) and Sapling (2018), where over a half-million ZEC remain years later. Migration never 'completes'.
What people are really asking for is assurance that their ZEC wasn't devalued by inflation.
That's exactly what the turnstile delivers. It enforces the 21m cap across every pool: no more ZEC can leave Orchard than legitimately entered it. Any hypothetical inflation stays trapped inside Orchard and cannot escape.
Funds that do move to Ironwood get the extra assurance of formal verification right away – protection against the class of undetectable counterfeiting bugs – regardless of how many others migrate.

We have two independently developed consensus implementations of it. One by @valargroup, and another by @ZcashFoundation. @valargroup's is in audit as well.

As diversas organizações e desenvolvedores do protocolo Zcash chegaram a um acordo definitivo sobre as regras de consenso para a próxima grande atualização da rede: a Ironwood.
Após o alinhamento dos detalhes técnicos, foi definido um caminho claro que visa proteger o ecossistema Zcash contra riscos sistêmicos, como ameaças teóricas de falsificação, sem comprometer a privacidade, que é a principal característica do protocolo.
Como o Ironwood funcionará?
Para proteger o ecossistema e auditar o fornecimento circulante (circulating supply) de forma privada, o Ironwood implementará uma transição de fundos por meio dos seguintes passos:
Ironwood: A atualização introduzirá uma nova pool de fundos utilizando o protocolo Orchard, funcionando exatamente como a pool Orchard atual.
A "Flag" de Proteção no Circuito: O circuito do protocolo Orchard, que rege tanto a pool atual quanto a nova, receberá um novo sinalizador (flag) controlado pelas regras de consenso. Quando ativada, essa flag bloqueia transferências para outros usuários dentro daquela pool específica, mas permite a criação de notas de troco. Essa é uma salvaguarda essencial para garantir que a privacidade do usuário seja mantida durante a movimentação dos fundos.
Congelamento de Depósitos na Pool Antiga

Como a pool antiga não aceitará mais transferências, os aplicativos de carteira (wallets) começarão a direcionar os novos pagamentos para a nova pool Orchard. Tudo isso ocorrerá dentro dos Endereços Unificados (UAs) que os usuários já possuem. Simultaneamente, as carteiras iniciarão a migração dos fundos armazenados na pool antiga para a nova.
Mas qual o propósito estratégico dessa mudança?
Ao forçar a migração de uma pool para a outra, ativa-se o mecanismo de turnstile da Zcash, como uma porta giratória.
Esse mecanismo atua como um pedágio de auditoria, impondo um limite matemático estrito ao fornecimento circulante de ZEC, que é de 21 milhões. A quantidade de ativos que atravessa essa "porta giratória" não pode ser superior à quantidade que legitimamente deveria existir.
À medida que as carteiras migram os fundos de forma automática e privada para proteger os ativos dos usuários, a rede constrói gradualmente uma prova criptográfica e incontestável de que nenhuma falsificação ocorreu na pool anterior, garantindo segurança máxima aliada à verificação contínua.

UPDATE: The various orgs and protocol developers mentioned have agreed on the specific consensus rule changes for Ironwood, after settling the finer details.
Here's a summary:
1. Ironwood introduces a new pool using the Orchard protocol, just like the existing pool.
2. The circuit for the Orchard protocol—which applies to both the existing Orchard pool and the new Ironwood pool—will have a flag that consensus rules can toggle. This flag disables payments to *other* users within that pool, while maintaining the ability to create change notes. (This enables a privacy safeguard.)
3. The old Orchard pool will have this flag enabled after the network upgrade, and payments to the old pool will also be disabled by constraining valueBalance.
4. Because payments are disabled on the old pool, wallets must send new payments to Orchard receivers (inside existing unified addresses) via the new pool, and they should also migrate funds away from the old pool.
This combination enforces a bound on the circulating supply of ZEC through the use of the existing turnstile mechanism; the amount of ZEC that anyone can transact with is no more than the amount that is supposed to exist. Meanwhile, users' wallets can migrate funds to protect them from risk, which also gradually provides evidence that counterfeiting never took place.
Now that we have this decided, we'll collectively move on to the implementations, specifications, and ecosystem support/outreach. (We also have many different auditing and formal verification efforts taking place behind the scenes to provide assurance about the circuit correctness. More on that soon!)

Thanks, Anthropic, for helping protect Zcash users. At Shielded Labs’s request, they ran a security audit of Zcash with Mythos. It did not find any more serious bugs in the Zcash protocol. Shielded Labs and others are continuing security hardening work. Stay tuned for updates.
