📣 Nature can recover! We depend on nature, but for too long, it's been undervalued. The latest Living Planet Index – produced by our scientists and published today in WWF’s Living Planet Report – shows us the consequences. Despite this, there’s reason for hope. Conservation wins are woven into the Index, and half of monitored wildlife populations are either holding steady or growing 💪 Read more at: zsl.org/news-and-events/news…

No single sector can prevent wildlife disease risks on its own. That is why the #OneHealth approach matters 🐾 In Karakol, Kyrgyzstan, IUCN, Camp Alatoo and partners are bringing together specialists from conservation, veterinary and public health sectors for practical One Health and biosafety training focused on prevention, early warning and safer responses to wildlife disease risks. 🎯The goal is simple: stronger cooperation, faster information-sharing and better preparedness across the human–animal–environment interface #1Health4Nature @iki_germany 🙌

🦠 Healthy ecosystems are part of the first line of defence against emerging health risks. Changes in biodiversity, climate and the way people interact with nature can affect wildlife health and influence the risk of diseases passing between animals and people. 🎯This is where #OneHealth comes in. Through #1Health4Nature #CentralAsia, experts are strengthening wildlife disease surveillance, laboratory diagnostics and regional cooperation — connecting nature conservation more closely with efforts to understand and prevent zoonotic disease risks. Last chance to apply for the MSc Wild Animal Health course 🩺 During the course, learn directly from our Wildlife Health Services team and gain clinical experience with the animals at our conservation zoos. Dr Arran Mackintosh, a current student, shares his experience: "The practical rotations component of the MSc in Wild Animal Health provided me with the opportunity to work and learn alongside the veterinary teams at both London Zoo and Whipsnade Zoo. I was able to apply and develop my clinical skills across a diverse range of species, whilst also gaining a deeper appreciation of the role of veterinarians in zoological animal welfare, wildlife research and global conservation." The course, taught jointly by ZSL and the Royal Veterinary College, has provided hundreds of veterinarians with a critical understanding of the management of wild animals and the epidemiology, treatment and control of wildlife disease. This MSc also provides training in research methods relevant to the study of wildlife in both zoo and wild settings. Applications close 31st July, find out more 👉 zsl.org/what-we-do/education…

Cracking the case on a deadly fungus 🐸🔎 The chytrid fungus is a major cause of devastating declines in amphibians around the world. We've spent the last two decades at the forefront of better understanding the fungus and protecting species from it. A brand-new study of common midwife toads in the Pyrenees - led by us, led by us, @ucl and @imperialcollege reveals why some toads are able to recover from outbreaks of the fungus. Why was His Majesty The King painting a tiny snail at London Zoo? 🐌 During a special visit to mark ZSL's 200th anniversary, ZSL Patron His Majesty The King helped give two very special partula snails a dot of “snail varnish” ahead of their release back into the wild later this year. The tiny dots of colour help our conservationists identify individual snails and monitor their progress once they return home to French Polynesia. This year’s cohort will be marked orange, but these two received a special Royal Purple mark to commemorate the visit. Partula snails were once driven to the brink of extinction after the introduction of another snail species devastated their populations — with some disappearing from the wild entirely. But thanks to decades of work by ZSL conservationists and partners around the world, these species have been rescued, cared for at London Zoo, and are now returning to their island homes. It’s one of ZSL’s longest-running conservation projects, led by some of our longest-serving experts, proving that no species is too small to save.

We are proud to share that Dr Becki Lawson, wildlife vet and researcher at our Institute of Zoology, @ZSLScience , has been awarded an MBE for her services to Wildlife Health! 🐸🐦‍⬛🩺 This honour recognises 25 years of work dedicated to understanding diseases that affect wildlife and their impacts in the UK and beyond. 🦭 After completing her studies in MSc Wild Animal Health with ZSL and the @RoyalVetCollege , Becki joined us in 2002, working with CSIP colleagues to investigate an outbreak of seal distemper. She has since gone on to work with a variety of species - from Critically Endangered Caribbean frogs threatened by a deadly fungus, to researching the health of otters, birds and bats in the UK. 🐦 Since 2013, Becki has focused on monitoring and protecting British garden birds, amphibians, reptiles and hedgehogs on a national scale through her work in the Garden @wildlife_health (GWH) project. 🦔 A collaboration between ZSL, @_BTO , @froglifers and RSPB @Natures_Voice , GWH combines scientific expertise with the power of citizen science to detect and respond to wildlife health threats. Over the last 13 years, Becki and the GWH team have used reports from members of the public to build a national database of wildlife disease, informed government policy and helped nature-lovers safeguard the health and welfare of wildlife in their gardens. We’re delighted to see Becki’s outstanding commitment to wildlife health be recognised as part of HM The King’s Birthday Honours list. HM King Charles serves as our Royal Patron, continuing a 200-year tradition of the reigning British Monarch being our Royal Patron. Congratulations Becki for this remarkable achievement! 👏

An inspiring evening exploring the connections between the health of people, nature and the planet 🌍💚 From global zoonotic disease prevention to the human-induced impacts of chemical pollution on marine mammals, our latest @ZSLScience Wild Talks event was a powerful reminder that wildlife health isn’t separate from human health. As a leader in wildlife health research, at ZSL, we work to understand the profound implications of the interconnectedness of humans, animals and ecosystems. Our panel of speakers explored how scientific research and real-world action are helping to safeguard the future of our planet by recognising these vital connections, discussing topics from building early warning systems for future pandemics, to engaging and training the next generation of wildlife veterinarians and conservationists. As said by the evening’s host @DoctorChrisVT “I'm very persuaded that the mandate for action comes from people like the people in this room. I can't think of a better place to locate action than ZSL and the amazing work that we've heard about” A huge thank you to Professor Chris van Tulleken for hosting such a thought-provoking discussion, and to speakers Dr Javier Sánchez Romano and Dr Rosie Williams from our Institute of Zoology, and Cat Hickey from our Conservation Education team, for sharing their expertise and insights on the importance of a One Health approach. 📽️ Watch the full event recording on YouTube: lnkd.in/eu54yTwn #OneHealth #WildTalks #CreatingChange #ZSLat200
