Gabon’s media regulator has restored access to social media after an eight-month suspension that sparked widespread criticism. The High Communication Authority (HAC) pulled the plug on social networks on 17 February blaming content posted online for stoking conflict and division in society. Facebook and TikTok, the most-used platforms in the country, as well as YouTube and Instagram were shut down, while WhatsApp worked intermittently. The Communication Authority says the suspension was aimed at allowing "the government to adapt its legal framework to better regulate social media”. Users are now required to provide formal identification, effectively ending online anonymity. The authority said it was working with Meta - which owns Facebook and Instagram - as well as TikTok and YouTube to "improve content moderation" on those platforms.

Zanu PF Director of Information Farai Marapira has dismissed concerns about the party’s direction following Vice President Constantino Chiwenga’s call for a “brutal and honest self-appraisal”. In an exclusive interview with ZiFM Stereo News reporter Vimbai Tandi on the sidelines of the party’s conference in Chinhoyi, Marapira said Zanu PF had “nothing to worry about”, pointing to economic growth and what he described as tangible results for Zimbabweans. President Emmerson Mnangagwa says 3,000 households in Chinhoyi have benefited from new water connections under infrastructure projects linked to ZANU-PF’s annual conference. Speaking during yesterday’s Central Committee meeting he said boreholes and a water purification plant had also been upgraded at Chinhoyi University of Technology, alongside the refurbishment of ten student and staff accommodation blocks. Chinhoyi Hospital is also set to unveil a solar power plant and medical oxygen facility.
Information Minister Dr Zhemu Soda says the 600-megawatt floating solar power plant at Lake Kariba is expected to complement hydroelectricity generation, ease pressure on water resources and strengthen national energy security. The US$650 million project, a partnership between ZETDC and Green Clean Energy Private Limited, is expected to supply electricity to three million people and create 1,000 direct jobs in Kariba when fully operational.
