Carl Ikeme had been at Wolves pretty much his entire career when he was diagnosed with acute leukaemia. He'd come through as a teenager and racked up more than 200 games, and the shirt still meant something every time he wore it.
In the summer of 2017, routine pre-season tests changed everything. Instead of getting ready for another season, he was fighting for his life.
Football took a back seat for the next year. He was in hospital in Manchester, with his partner Saba by his side, and Wolves never went anywhere.
โThey constantly asked if there was anything I needed when I was in hospital in Manchester.โ
โThey sorted all my treatment, looked after me and were there for me any time I had to call.โ
That same season, Wolves won the Championship and went up to the Premier League. Ikeme didn't play a single game.
When he was finally told he was in remission, the treatment had taken too heavy a toll, and the doctor advised him to retire.
โI canโt really risk trying to come back, my health is the priority.โ
โI want to be here for my children, family and friends.โ
So he had to come to terms with never playing for Wolves again. Then the club did something he never forgot: rather than simply honouring his existing deal, they put him on the improved Premier League contract he'd have got had he been fit to play.
โThe club helped me in ways they didnโt need to.โ
โThey told me they werenโt just going to honour my existing contract.โ
โThey were putting me on the improved contract I would have received for playing in the Premier League.โ
โThey did that despite the fact I never played last season and now Iโve had to retire.โ
From the days of Portakabins and mini-buses to watching the return to the Premier League from a hospital room, he'd given Wolves years. Even after football was taken from him, they made sure he knew he still belonged.
โIโm proud this is my club and it always will be.โ
โIโm proud I can always come back to Wolverhampton and always have friends here.โ
โAnd be loved.โ

When Mick McCarthy took over as Wolves manager in July 2006, he arrived at a club that was struggling financially and had just lost several important players.
Glenn Hoddle had resigned a few weeks earlier, and McCarthy had been brought in to rebuild the team and get Wolves challenging for promotion.
But one of his first conversations at Wolves wasnโt with a footballer.
It was with a man called Dan Morgan, who worked as a cleaner at the training ground.
McCarthy was meeting the staff when he came across Dan and asked what he did at the club.
โIโm Dan.โ
โIโm just the cleaner.โ
McCarthy immediately stopped him.
โNever say youโre just the f****** cleaner.โ
โYouโre the cleaner, and youโre doing a job, and thatโs important!โ
He explained that if the players arrived on a Monday morning and found the dressing room hadnโt been cleaned, they would all be complaining.
โDonโt ever say that to me again.โ
โYouโre one of us, come on.โ
McCarthy had always believed that everybody working at a football club should feel part of the same team, regardless of their job.
โThereโs nobody beneath me.โ
For Dan, that first conversation was something he never forgot.
โFrom that first moment he always made me feel so comfortable, like a part of the team.โ
McCarthy made sure Dan was included in everything going on around the training ground.
โHe always involved me in the dressing room banter.โ
Over the following six years, McCarthy transformed Wolves and guided them back into the Premier League as Championship winners in 2009.
He developed a close relationship with the staff and made a point of getting to know people working in every department of the club.
Dan was still there when Wolves eventually sacked McCarthy in February 2012 after a 5-1 defeat to West Brom.
McCarthy had spent almost six years at Molineux, and his departure was an emotional moment for many people at the club.
But a few weeks later, Dan received an unexpected phone call.
He and his partner Sarah had recently welcomed a baby and moved into a new house.
McCarthy knew about it and had been clearing out his own house in Seisdon.
He asked Dan whether there was anything they needed.
Dan went round to see him, and McCarthy had a load of furniture and other belongings ready to give to him.
Rather than arranging for someone else to deliver everything, McCarthy hired a van himself.
Dan helped him load it up before they drove over to his new house and carried everything inside.
โHe went and sat in the babyโs bedroom and put all the drawers together for me.โ
Once everything was sorted, he sat down on the sofa and had a cup of tea with Dan.
โHe didnโt have to do any of that.โ
Dan knew McCarthy could easily have paid someone to clear his house and deliver the furniture, especially after spending so many years managing in the Premier League.
Instead, he had spent the day helping somebody who had introduced himself six years earlier as โjust the cleanerโ.
โThat just sums him up for me.โ
โAnd whenever anyone asks what it was like to work for Mick McCarthy, that is the story I tell them.โ

I was so privileged to have been invited to the service celebrating the life of former professional footballer Mike Bailey.
I listened to wonderful memories of not only a fantastic footballer but more importantly, a dearly loved husband, dad, grandpa and friend.
It was lovely to see representatives from both @CAFCofficial and @Wolves there too.
Mike captained both clubs, lifting the League Cup for the Wolves in 1974 โฝ๏ธ
My thoughts are with Mikes wife Barbara, son Andrew, daughter Victoria and all the Bailey family at this really difficult time.
The family very kindly asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The Jeff Astle Foundation @JeffAstleFdn
Their support is really appreciated - #dementiainfootball
