The Conservatives will always be the friends of the Armed Forces.
This is why we will stand up for our Northern Ireland veterans, and why we are continuing to make the case for spending 3% of GDP on defence by 2030.
Great to join @CFArmedForces at Conference.
Labour are making the choice welfare over defence. This will ultimately leave us vulnerable and cost more in the long run.

It’s time for @AndyBurnham to do the right thing, and Axe the Family Farm Tax. 🚜
Should young people be supported into careers rather than straight onto benefits? The Conservatives’ proposed Get to Work scheme would introduce work requirements for under-25s who haven’t worked for six months.

Ofgem have today revealed that Britain might not have enough gas in a worst case scenario this winter.
Burnham says that it's better to produce oil and gas in Britain than importing it. So why is he banning new licences?

In May, @KemiBadenoch and I first proposed using Labour’s Chagos cash to accelerate production of the 13 Frigates we ordered in Government, currently being built in Scotland.
Yet another reason why I would very much welcome John Healey adopting our plan in next week’s Budget👇

I welcome the launch of the Government’s household preparedness campaign, which is long overdue. As Shadow Minister for Defence, Security and Resilience, I have worked extensively on what an effective campaign should look like, seeking to take a collaborative, cross-party approach.
In June, I led a debate on national resilience and the need for a national conversation about preparedness. I have visited our allies to learn from their approaches, including visiting Denmark to discuss its national preparedness campaign.
However, the Government’s approach falls short.
Today’s launch was announced haphazardly, with no parliamentary statement and no coherent campaign around it. It is not the way to start a campaign that needs to reach every household in Britain.
Ministers must be honest with the public about the threats we face and explain how the advice they are giving relates to those threats. Advice alone, without that context, is unlikely to prompt people to prepare.
Ultimately, the campaign largely repackages the existing online Prepare campaign, which has failed to reach and engage enough people. We need clear, practical advice, grounded in an honest explanation of the risks and delivered in a way that reaches every household.
I have produced a booklet drawing on those distributed in European countries such as Denmark and the Netherlands.
These booklets explain the threats, why household preparedness matters and what people can do in clear and accessible language.
The Government must go further. An effective campaign needs to explain both what people should do and why they should do it.

I strongly welcome the new Gun Hall at Telford, restoring sovereign 🇬🇧 large-calibre barrel manufacture, and offer my best wishes to the workforce. I remember vividly the moment I was in Kassel, as Defence Procurement Minister in spring 2024, and first initiated the plan – after witnessing the German production line, with the amazing precision ‘fettling’ skills that entailed. Co-operating on this would form the basis of a 🇬🇧🇩🇪 statement of intent which I signed in May 2024, in turn becoming part of the Trinity House agreement.
A key reason for moving production over to the UK was not just jobs, as important as that is, but accelerating the RCH programme through additional capacity, and restoring a genuinely important military skill set. Given the original aims when we first discussed this, I welcome the rapid timeline – proving that pace is possible!

We cannot expect police officers to chase dangerous criminals, confront armed suspects and tackle violent crime if they fear spending years under investigation for doing their jobs.
Officers must be able to use their lawful powers with confidence, knowing they will be supported when they act appropriately to protect the public.
Great, does that mean they are going to set out 3% of GDP by 2030 to fund defence?
