"The £2.3-billion rise in the schools budget will quickly get swallowed up by ongoing cost pressures."

ALT Quote from IFS Research Economist Luke Sibieta; "The £2.3-billion rise in the schools budget will quickly get swallowed up by ongoing cost pressures. About £1bn is going on special needs where numbers and costs have been spiralling for nearly a decade. A further £450m will be needed to cover the full cost of this year’s teacher pay rise. That leaves about £850m for other pressures, as well as the cost of pay rises for next year."

But schools also face big & rising costs. Special needs funding will rise by £1bn next year (or 6%) but numbers have been rising faster than that. The 5.5% pay rise for teachers agreed from Sept 2024 will cost ~£450m.
That leaves about £850m for other costs & priorities.

A £2.3-billion boost to the core schools budget in 2025-26 will see per-pupil spending in England rise by 1.6%, putting resources above their 2010 level for the first time.
That follows a similar rise in per-pupil spending last year.

Resolving this situation really matters. Have the government created the conditions to do this effectively and will the sector have enough time to respond to the outcome?

This is the only misstep I’ve seen Phillipson make so far.
There is no way colleges can wait until Jan to find out if they can offer BTECs next September.
Open evenings are this term! Ads need designing, staff sorting!
And crucially: this would never happen to A-Levels.
🗣️ More than 450 school and college leaders have made a last-ditch plea with the education secretary to stop the 'madness' and pause the planned cull of BTECs for at least one year

A powerful vision beautifully expressed by @MuftiPatel on the difference education can make to our society in these troubled times.
"Our schools are also drivers for change, the pioneers of a better future, and the hope of a more peaceful, more caring world."
'When they return to school, we will need to remind our children of all the love they saw this summer and the light that came through the darkness'

These discussions sound fascinating. Lots to think about in this: "The shift from transactional engagement to relational engagement... I believe it is the basis of a new social contract not just with our colleagues in the organisations we lead, but also with pupils & parents"
Summary of the brilliant conversations we had @CSTvoice #CEOSummit - a new style of event in which we posed a system level problem and then curated a conversation with members. We started with a provocation from @McBreartySinead and then looked at the evidence with @BeckyFrancis7

According to this research only 5% of girls and young women in the UK feel completely safe in public spaces, while almost half believe they do not have the same educational and employment opportunities as boys and young men of the same age.
WE. MUST. DO. BETTER.
From Lincolnshire to London, girls across the UK are angry and frustrated about the state of equality and girls’ rights.
But it doesn't have to be this way. Together with girls, we can achieve gender equality for this generation.

Sadly not surprised at devastating @EduPolicyInst stats today. The gap was already widening before the pandemic + levels of child poverty continue to rise. Reversing this trend is possible, schools have done it before, but we must also have action on the root causes of poverty.
