I actually think we're overlooking a slightly more obvious link with the Rushdie case
If you ever sought out the novels of Sally Rooney in bookshops – when that was still possible – you’d know they sit in the fiction stacks adjacent to the novels of another SR whose books have been withdrawn in dastardly political circumstances. Until last week, “Rooney” and “Rushdie” had little in common beyond being shelfmates; now they have more than just a physical proximity. @tanjil_rashid_: This is censorship by other means newstatesman.com/comment/202…

This comparison is as offensive as it is stupid. Rushdie had to spend years hiding from Islamists who wanted him murdered just for what he wrote, and bookshops faced violent attack if they stocked it.  Rooney’s publisher has stopped supplying her novels purely and simply because she insists on directing royalties to an illegal organisation.  There is a grotesque irony in invoking a man hunted by Islamists to build sympathy for supporters of a proscribed group that is stuffed full of Islamists

ISLAM IS NOW THE LARGEST CATEGORY OF CASES HANDLED BY THE FREE SPEECH UNION. Cases involving Islam have overtaken those concerning people penalised for expressing gender-critical beliefs. Since the Labour Government came to power in July 2024, the number of cases involving Islam has more than doubled, said @BenBarryJones, the FSU’s Director of Case Management, at our live recording of the FSU Podcast at the Battle of Ideas. This is astonishing in a country that abolished blasphemy laws in 2008 — 18 years ago. Watch the full episode on the FSU YouTube channel 👇

I will be talking about Britain’s free speech crisis at Cardiff University on Thursday. The local youth aren’t happy about it bless them. Should be fun 😇

We currently have a Prime Minister on LADbible discussing: VAR. The price of a pint. Oasis. If northerners are funnier than southerners. Andy Burnham is an unserious man in a very serious time. Bad combination.

The connection between immigration from the Muslim world and the destruction in France is obvious. I interviewed an Ex Muslim @AudaxFieldNotes who fled his home country after leaving Islam. Listen to what he says he was taught at school about ‘Migration Jihad’

I was also invited to debate Andy Burnham. I obviously said yes. A few days before filming was apparently going to take place I was told I didn’t make the cut. Glad they covered all the most pressing issues.

'Palestinians' literally fought in WW2 for the Nazis. This is fucking disgusting.
I’ve just seen the so-called "Palestine Poppy" & it’s one of the most worst things I’ve ever seen. Attempting to hijack on a well known apolitical symbol which brings people together on Remembrance Day is completely disrespectful. Only the most insufferable people will wear it.

I’m in a beautiful Austrian themed bar in London, owned by a man whose parents fled from fled from the Nazis. The atmosphere is so joyful, with Brits, Europeans and Americans. Everyone is singing happy songs. As I think of France burning, all I can think is how long will this joy last? I feel as though we are celebrating the end of days without realising it.

BREAKING: A large group of young right-wing Frenchmen carrying red flags with crosses on them took to the streets of Rouen tonight to stop Antifa and migrants gangs from vandalizing the city and looting stores. Before the clash they chanted: “This is OUR home!”

The scenes in France make me so sad. When I return from London to my home in rural England, I have a bitter sweet feeling. It’s so nice to return to civilisation, but I wonder how long it will be until this place is taken from me too.

France is on fire. This fate awaits us too, if we don’t wake up quickly.

Today is the sixth anniversary of the murder of Samuel Paty, the history and geography teacher who was beheaded by an Islamist near his school in Conflates-Sainte-Honorine, outside of Paris. He had shown students the Charlie Hebdo cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad during a lesson on freedom of expression, in which he emphasised that students could choose not to look at the cartoons if they were offended. In the UK, the Batley Grammar school teacher is still in hiding due to threats to his life after he too showed students cartoons of Muhammad in a lesson about freedom of speech. The Labour government's Islamophobia definition will make it even harder to talk about the brutal murder of Samuel Paty. At the Free Speech Union there has been a four fold increase in cases where people have been penalised for criticising Islam. To help the fight against Islamic blasphemy laws, join the Free Speech Union or donate to our crowdfunders which are dedicated to stopping the Islamophobia definition taking hold and for helping people who get into trouble for criticising Islam - link below. We stand in solidarity with Mr Paty's family and his colleagues and all those who continue to risk their lives by challenging sacred values and encouraging others to think critically about them.
