One of my favorite movies for Halloween, THE CHANGELING, stars George C. Scott as a composer who moves into a haunted mansion in Seattle. Peter Medak directed the 1980 Canadian supernatural horror film. Great stuff.

Just in time for Halloween, Publishers Weekly has an article about the growing popularity of “horromance,” (horror/romance) a “kiss me/kill me” genre that could be a spin off from “romantasy.”

The hottest trend in publishing apparently is part of a centuries-old heritage. Read about “romantasy” and its ties to medieval romances in The Guardian.

The worst is coming. Over 300 movies and streaming shows have already used A.I., in some cases for writing. Soon the only things I’ll watch will be productions before this year.

I love CBS’s new legal drama CUPERTINO about a law firm’s fight against the abuses of high tech. Lively, witty, timely & each episode is blessedly self-contained rather than carrying the bloat of most ltd series. The title refers to a Silicon Valley community. Also on Paramount+.
My favorite ghost novel for Halloween is Henry James’s THE TURN OF THE SCREW (1898). He wrote it so that the reader can’t be certain if the ghosts are real or imagined, calling it “a trap for the unwary.” My essay about James’s ghost stories is in my collection STARS IN MY EYES.
THE YEAR’S BEST AMERICAN MYSTERY AND SUSPENSE will publish next week (Oct. 20). Edited by Megan Abbott and Steph Cha, it includes my short story “The Corpse Collector,” first published in the Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine. Pre-order here:

“Don’t chase the market. You’ll always see its backside.” That’s one of the premises of THE SUCCESSFUL NOVELIST, my book about writing. Read a sample chapter on my website.

Interesting interview with Lee Child on why he turned down a third Reacher feature film, and why he prefers a streaming adaptation version. He’s a nice guy as well as an amazing writer.

THE HEART OF THE BEAST gets a rave review from The Hollywood Reporter. I loved it. Brad Pitt is terrific, as is the dog. It’s a movie/movie that needs to be seen in a theater.
