Why I hate verum rex?
First of all, yozora is nothing but a copy-paste of Riku with a simple color swap lacking any creativity, all while “Disney-fying”. There's no real effort in creation or originality, just a visual rehash that feels hollow.
The character designs lack identity and charm, and have no charisma, even the NPCs are better developed.
The Gigas, these gigantic robot-like creatures, are just hideous. They look like cheap plastic toys. Their presence completely ruins the aesthetic.
It’s no longer a Final Fantasy game. Yes, it may sound trivial, but for me, that changes everything. verum rex has lost the very essence of what made FF Versus XIII so special and unique within the FF universe.
Kingdom Hearts is a Disney franchise. And I don’t like Disney. So, verum rex, being integrated into that universe, inherits that connection. It discredits it in my eyes, and completely pulls me out of the experience.
And above all, it’s a betrayal to the fans of Final Fantasy Versus XIII. It’s been nearly 20 years that many have been waiting for this game. verum rex is not Versus XIII: it’s an insult, a bland imitation that has nothing to do with the original vision.
We need to demand a remake of Final Fantasy XV directed by Nomura so that he can finally tell us the true story of FFXV and Noctis and Stella!

Etro and the Myth in Final Fantasy Versus XIII / XV
In the traditions derived from the Fabula Nova Crystallis myth, Etro is the Goddess of Death, tied to the Invisible World and to the flow of souls between the two realms. She possesses neither a true physical form nor a direct presence in the Visible World, yet her existence profoundly influences the balance of the world.
Fabula Nova Crystallis (FNC) constitutes a shared mythological foundation used across several Square Enix works. However, this foundation is never applied uniformly: each game in the compilation offers a different interpretation, adapted to its own universe, themes, and narrative presentation.
Within this framework, Final Fantasy Versus XIII / XV represents one of the most distinctive approaches to the myth. Whereas other titles present the divine elements of FNC more directly, FF Versus XIII / XV is designed as a work in which the myth is the most hidden, the most spiritual, and the most indirect. Divine forces do not appear in a straightforward manner, but manifest through symbols, visions, and unseen influences on the characters’ destinies.
In this vision, as reflected in development concepts and statements from Tetsuya Nomura, the world is built around a porous boundary between tangible reality and an invisible dimension. Mythology here is not an explanatory narrative, but a underlying presence that structures the characters’ fates without ever fully revealing itself.
Etro fits fully within this approach.
She is regarded as the deity associated with death, fate, and the passage between worlds. Her domain, Valhalla, is described as a timeless space where wandering souls can exist between life and death.
In the initial concepts of the project, Nomura describes a modern world (Lucis / Insomnia) permeated by invisible manifestations of fate, where the laws of the visible world are insufficient to explain events. In this context, Etro does not function as an active narrative entity, but rather as a structural force connecting the living and the dead and indirectly influencing the unfolding of destiny.
Early game concepts establish that certain individuals, notably Prince Noctis and Princess Stella in the initial versions of the scenario, possess a special connection to the Invisible World. This connection allows them to perceive phenomena linked to the dead and to fate, often described in development documents as manifestations associated with Etro’s influence.
This link is sometimes referred to in development materials by the informal name “Eyes of Etro”, representing the ability to perceive fragments of the Invisible World within the Visible World. Within the design logic, this type of power is not presented as conventional magic, but rather as a sensitivity to the invisible fabric of fate.
In the mythology used as the project’s foundation, Etro also acts as an entity regulating the balance between life and death. The souls of the deceased pass through her realm before reaching the Invisible World, and this passage maintains the stability of the flow of Chaos, a fundamental element of the Fabula Nova Crystallis myth. In explanations associated with FNC, this balance is not only cosmic but also an essential condition for the coherence of the universe.
Another important element of the project’s artistic concepts is Etro’s visual representation by Yoshitaka Amano. This depiction appears as a painting in early visuals related to Fabula Nova Crystallis and FF Versus XIII / XV. It shows a female figure associated with death and transcendence, often interpreted as Etro herself or as a symbolic embodiment of her role in human destiny.
This iconography is consistent with the project’s overall artistic direction, in which deities are never fully embodied in the physical world, but are instead suggested through visions, symbols, and indirect influences.
This image is also indirectly reflected in the logo of FF Versus XIII / XV, where a stylized female figure appears within a composition of darkness and light. In production materials and interpretations derived from FNC’s artistic direction, this figure is widely regarded as a symbolic representation of Etro in her role as goddess of fate and death, or as a projection of her influence upon the world of the living.
Thus, in the vision of FF Versus XIII / XV, Etro is not only a deity within the FNC mythos, but also a structural element of the narrative: she connects the Visible World and the Invisible World, indirectly influences the destinies of the main characters, and serves as a foundation for the game’s central theme, the constant link between the living, the dead, and inescapable fate.

Fabula Nova Crystallis
In the beginning, the universe was divided into two realms: the Visible World, domain of the living, and the Invisible World, domain of the dead.
The Visible World was ruled by two deities: Mwynn and her son, Bhunivelze. Desiring absolute control over the world, Bhunivelze turned against his mother and sought to defeat her. Mwynn then vanished into the Invisible World.
After her disappearance, Bhunivelze ruled alone over the Visible World. However, he was an anxious god. Observing that all things seemed destined to disappear one day, he became convinced that his mother had cast a curse upon the Visible World.
Convinced that only the definitive destruction of Mwynn could bring an end to this supposed curse, Bhunivelze sought a way to reach the Invisible World. However, it was impossible for him to access that realm without relinquishing control over the Visible World.
In order to find a passage to the Invisible World, Bhunivelze created the first fal'Cie.
The first of these was Pulse. He was given the task of traversing and shaping the world in order to discover the gate leading to the realm of the dead.
Bhunivelze then created the fal'Cie Etro. However, he realized that he had unintentionally given her the appearance of Mwynn. Terrified by this resemblance, he decided to grant her no power.
To replace Etro, he then created the fal'Cie Lindzei. He entrusted it with the mission of protecting the world and watching over it, and ordered it to awaken him when the gate to the Invisible World had been discovered.
Having entrusted the world to his creations, Bhunivelze transformed himself into crystal and fell into a deep sleep.
Meanwhile, Pulse continued his work by shaping the world according to his will. Lindzei, on its side, fulfilled its duty of protection.
Etro, however, had been given neither power nor purpose. Abandoned by her creator, she turned toward the only being she resembled: Mwynn.
Overwhelmed by despair, Etro mutilated herself and ended her life.
The blood that flowed from her body gave birth to humanity.
Humans were beings born with a tragic destiny: to live and then die.
After her death, Etro joined the Invisible World. There, she discovered Mwynn, who was on the verge of being consumed by a strange energy called Chaos.
With her last breath, Mwynn revealed the truth to Etro. The future destruction of the Visible World was not a curse, but an inevitable part of destiny. The universe relied on the balance between the Visible World and the Invisible World. If this balance were ever broken, the entire universe would disappear.
Mwynn then asked Etro to preserve this balance.
However, Etro did not fully understand Mwynn’s final words. Shortly after, Bhunivelze’s mother was consumed by Chaos.
Left alone in the Invisible World, Etro developed a deep affection for the humans born from her blood. She welcomed each of them kindly after their death.
Refusing to abandon them to their tragic fate, she granted them all a fragment of Chaos. This fragment became what humans called their heart.
Without even realizing it, Etro was fulfilling Mwynn’s final wish. As long as humans continued to be born and die while carrying Chaos in their hearts, the balance between the two worlds remained preserved.
Over time, humanity came to worship the fal'Cie.
Pulse was honored as the all-powerful Lord.
Lindzei was revered as the Protector of the world.
Etro became the Goddess of Death, the one who welcomes the souls of the deceased into the Invisible World.
And as humans continued their existence carrying Chaos in their hearts, Bhunivelze remained asleep within his crystal, waiting for the day the gate to the Invisible World would be discovered.

Nomura described Stella is the first female character that will stand out from all previous FF.. imagine the creator & visionary the man responsible for iconic female characters like Tifa, Aerith, Rinoa and Yuna tells you that Stella will outshine them all 🫠..
I've been waiting, or rather, many of us have been waiting, for the true version of FFXV for over 20 years now. And I stand by my position: we have to reclaim an FFXV Remake directed by Nomura so we can finally experience the true story of FFXV!
