The $6.3 billion Binance hack exposed a major limitation of centralized stablecoin control. Tether reported freezing over $1.567 billion in USDT. Circle froze more than $800 million in USDC. Significant interventions. But they didn't recover everything. Here's why. Before the freezes took effect, Elliptic estimates the attacker converted approximately $786 million in stablecoins into ETH and TRX. There's another interesting development. The attacker deposited $59.9 million in stolen USDT as collateral on Aave and borrowed 19,762 ETH, worth approximately $44.2 million at the time. Aave subsequently froze the affected markets, preventing new deposits and borrowing. However, it did not seize the attacker's existing position. Now, consider the bigger picture. USDT and USDC have centralized issuers. Tether and Circle can blacklist addresses and freeze balances of their respective tokens. But ETH, BTC, XRP and TRX are different. These are native blockchain assets. Tether and Circle cannot freeze them through their stablecoin contracts. According to Elliptic's October 31 analysis, approximately $3.21 billion in assets remained under the attacker's control that could not be frozen by a centralized token issuer. That's the bigger problem. The attacker can convert assets into cryptocurrencies that fall outside the direct freezing authority of stablecoin issuers. Of course, this doesn't make those assets untraceable or impossible to recover. Exchanges, other service providers and law enforcement can still play a role. The real lesson: Centralized stablecoins offer powerful intervention mechanisms, but those controls have limits. Freezing USDT and USDC can disrupt a hacker's operations. It doesn't guarantee that the stolen funds will be recovered. That's the fundamental challenge of enforcing centralized controls across a decentralized financial ecosystem.
