I have a very sensitive spot to the fact that Latin America has felt like it’s had the boot on its neck from the United States for many, many decades and in Central America. When I travelled throughout Central America during my service, I saw the negative results of that directly. And I think that we, the United States, owe the people of Latin America a lot more. We need to be much more humble in how we engage people of Latin America. All that said, I think that the way Maduro was engaging was diabolical to his people. But I am not in favour of having the United States go and conduct regime change policies in foreign countries. I doubt Donald Trump would kidnap Lula. But I say that with a squint because giving refuge to Bolsonaro’s son now makes me concerned and nervous… And this is where it is paramount for Democrats, even though we won’t have a lot of power, even if we get the Congress back, we can shine a spotlight onto that exact question to prevent it from being executed and have the public recognise it.
