Seplat went looking for gas and found oil too, by accident. Its Aku-01 well has an estimated 157 billion cubic feet of gas and 19 million barrels of oil in place. Seplat says the oil wasn't even part of the original plan. It holds 40% of the licence, and a second well is planned for 2027. Meanwhile, look at what shareholders are getting. A 19 US cent dividend this quarter, 14 cents of it a special dividend. That's 40 cents so far this year. The stock is at an all-time high of ₦16,000.10, up about 175% this year. Most companies drill and hope.
