A close friend with MIT/Harvard biochem/pharma research experience, including groundbreaking work, is now delivering mail because he can't find work in his field. Federal science funding cuts have made an already difficult market worse. Meanwhile, applicants use AI to optimize resumes for ATS/AI screening, while employers use AI to filter them. We're getting better at matching keywords, not necessarily identifying capability. The process is also shaped by hiring managers who have never been trained to evaluate talent, referrals that are favored because familiarity feels safer, and interviews that reward charisma over demonstrated ability. Could Jack improve his job search? Possibly. But 2,300 rejections don't prove he's the problem. That assumes the hiring process accurately measures merit. People can do everything right and still face a system that fails to recognize their ability. Dismissing this as WSJ fearmongering overlooks the complexity of hiring today. Happy to talk shop. There's a lot happening between being qualified and getting hired that deserves closer examination.
