What does a mask do? Blocks respiratory droplets coming from your mouth and throat.
Two simple demos:
First, I sneezed, sang, talked & coughed toward an agar culture plate with or without a mask. Bacteria colonies show where droplets landed. A mask blocks virtually all of them.

Me to my family “trust me, I’m a biologist”
Also me “I dunno, I’m not that kind of biologist!”
I understand their confusion when all they get is that I study “small things” – at Burnaby, British Columbia

Just received a @CIHR_IRSC CGS-D award to support my doctoral studies on investigating the roles of autophagy in breast cancer! So much gratitude for the support from my senior supervisor and lab friends! Can't wait to get back to the lab soon :) @SFUResearch. @SFU_Science
So cool! I'm no expert, but this could really open up anti-HER2 targeted agents as potential therapeutic options for breast cancers that don't fall under the "conventional" HER2+ subtype 😀
Excited to share our #JCO work on HER2-Low BC, an emerging entity with potentially relevant clinical & translational implications

My observations on a #coronavirus chart by @CDCofBC reported in a @CBCNews story by @j_mcelroy. The chart is vexing — it holds the answer to a very important question (arguably, THE question) but won't let you know it. #datavis
Congratulations, @shinta_zhang! ❤️
Congratulations @shinta_zhang on defending you MSc!!! We have spent so many days and nights dreaming of this day, and today you did it! I'm so proud of you!
While it's been tough, but we can still celebrate together!

I remember how hard it was learning sterile lab technique.
"Don't touch that!"
“No, not that way!"
"What did you do that for?”
“No, hold it like this”
It’s not intuitive and it’s hard work breaking old habits. Feels like the whole planet is sharing that experience now.
