Quelques personnes m'ont demandé en quoi consistait au quotidien le boulot d'un Flight Dispatcher (et non...on ne travaille pas dans une tour de contrôle 😁). Il faut dire que ce métier de l'ombre est assez méconnu. Voici pour éclairer la lanterne de ceux que ça intéresserait ⤵️

S'il s'était agi d'un jeune homme, les réseaux auraient pleuré un "jeune prodige au destin brisé". Avec une femme, ça prend deux secondes aux experts autoproclamés du dimanche pour venir débattre de sa légitimité dans le cockpit. Le sexisme ordinaire, fidèle au poste.
Quand un "expert" du dimanche instrumentalise un drame aéronautique et la mort d'une jeune pilote de 20 ans pour étaler son ego, se raconter en héros et faire la leçon à tout le monde. Indécence et nombrilisme de bas étage.

Flight path right through the center of a deep red radar return, then just a dive straight down to the deck in a right bank.

Regarding the radar question, older radar units require some crew input to manually adjust the vertical “tilt” of the radome which scans laterally constantly.
Depending on altitude, pitch, and proximity to the cell, the tilt needs to be adjusted to paint an accurate picture or it could be looking under (ground returns) or over the cell itself. It can also paint erroneous returns if thick ice is built up on the radome.
Moderate to severe turbulence (600-700’ deviations) with the nose swinging wildly around would also obscure the view and make adjusting the tilt knob quite difficult - as would the workload of trying to maintain control of the “bucking bronco”.
Finally, radar shadowing could also be a factor. A dense cell could mask the returns of another cell behind it giving a false sense of security to an area that may actually weather.
We may never know sadly. FYI newer radar units have an “auto” function where gain and tilt are adjusted and cycled automatically drastically reducing crew workload and increasing the reliability of the returns.

A pilot should not:

A pilot needs a certain disposition. This is not it. That's the reality.

Having a front row seat to your own demise is an emotionally distressing experience and pilots have been known to scream in such situations.
