So basically, today PHP got two critical bugs that let anyone run code on your server without even logging in, which is bad, and then the details leaked before the patch was even out, which is worse, and it works on WordPress and MediaWiki and Magento and Joomla and Laravel, and Censys says like 1.5 million servers are running a version with no fix, so the NSA was like "take your system offline," and the FBI was like "take your system offline," and CISA and the UK and CERT-EU were all like "take your system offline," and then the Prime Minister of Japan, the actual Prime Minister, posted at 5:55 in the morning telling 48.8 million people to take their system offline, so everyone took their system offline, like the Dutch cybersecurity agency took its own website offline, and the Dutch parliament went offline, and the Port of Rotterdam went offline, and Finland and France and Denmark started pulling government sites, and Wikipedia went down, and Archive.org went down, and Asana and GOG and Something Awful went down, and the University of Vienna's webmail went down for some reason, and that's just PHP. Because GitLab also dropped a CVSS 10.0, which is the highest score they give out, for a bug that's been there since 2014, so that's every self-hosted GitLab for twelve years, and then LiteLLM 1.107.0 got hijacked and shipped a credential stealer and a remote access trojan in every single wheel and the Docker images, including latest, and you didn't even have to import it, just installing it was enough, and it's the second time this year, and then Railway paused every deployment on the entire platform because someone got into the environment variables, so now everyone has to rotate every secret they've ever stored there, and TiDB Cloud said someone was walking around inside with stolen credentials for basically a month and an extortion group says they took 10.6 terabytes, and Zeabur got breached for the second time in two months and is just shutting down, like the whole company, and Node.js patched remote code execution and a TLS bypass, and CISA says Plex is being actively exploited, and someone took over 300 Tor exit relays to steal SSH passwords, and SafePay ransomware has hit over 600 critical infrastructure orgs, and India's biggest bank filed a data loss incident, and Japan has been in an official state of emergency in cyberspace since October 9, which honestly explains the 5:55 AM post. Oh, and eMudhra, a certificate authority that's issued over 60 million certificates, whose entire job is proving websites are who they say they are, was supposed to be using private keys that are random numbers over a hundred digits long, and one of them was 4. Just 4. And the others were like 66 and 237. Anyway, it's Wednesday.

want to see how the whole Paper Mono launch video was made?
everything is code but I didn't touch any of it
here we go 🔥
Puse Wave Modulation (PWM) is probably triggering my chronic migraines.
The @daylightco DC-1 has helped tremendously.
Flickering screens (arguably) mess up your dopamine
60fps paperlike screens absolutely are the future of personal computing
5 years from now this will obvious to everyone and we’ll be wondering why we didn’t realize it earlier

As a former effective altruist, who believed in an ever expanding moral circle, here is why even if you want to care for as many as possible, which I still do, you have to prioritize the local. We could cheekily call it „effective nationalism“.
Whatever your theory of change or the good is, its realization depends on your (the moral actors) continual existence (self-maintenance) as well as the ground you stand on that enables your continual existence (family, culture, nation) and affluence from which you can afford to think about such lofty goals. Accordingly even if you have global charitable aims, they are causally dependent on everything local to you. And maintaining this ground is infinitely harder —there is an asymmetry in importance—than being in the historical exceptional position where you might be under the impression that there is such an abundance of resources you can use it to help others far outside the ground you stand on.
Effective altruism assumes “everything works and will work and affluence is given and will continue ”, thus far out there ideas are neglected while everything local is already taken care of. I’d argue basically everything is always neglected, never done to a satisfactory degree, barely even satisficed. Civilizational affluence, without an end of history mentality, has always been an outlier and there is no reason to assume anything has changed now. The further away you spend your resources without careful consideration of the costs to your foundation, the more you speed up the deterioration of this local affluence. It’s an entropic force. If you take your affluence for a given in this generation, the ethics of the next one will have to focus entirely on building it back from scratch, and it will likely take more than one if it’s possible at all, some things lost stay lost.
The majority of the question of how to use resources ethically will always yield that it is about sustaining the living systems you depend on first, it is the majority of the issue at hand.

The ultimate goal is getting paid to be yourself. To solve problems you can't help but solve. To study what you can't pull yourself away from. To eliminate any work that does not challenge you creatively.
I feel obligated to let my fellow nerds know that paper-like screens are the foundation for healthier computing.
Reflective displays means no flicker, natural light, and blue-light-free amber backlight at night.
we’ll look back on the 2010-2020s as this utterly insane period where we stared into flickering screens most of our waking hours … wondering why we were so distracted and dysregulated
I am once again reminding you that getting artificial dopamine hits inside non-stop all day is frying your chimp brain more than you dare to imagine.
They can literally cook your entire life.
Heck, in general, if you are depressed, unmotivated, lazy, and even don’t enjoy life much immediately cut out all artificial dopamine hits and go outside.
You might laugh at this initially but give it 3 weeks and you will never look at social media the same.
It’s basic science.
D2 receptors, for example, are susceptible to downregulation from overstimulation, artificial blue light is shown to lead to a 30% reduction of tyrosine hydroxylase-positive neurons in the substantia nigra in many animal models etc.
So you can not live an overstimulating life indoors and wonder why you don’t derive pleasure from anything natural or why you're not driven to create something.

The left is on a project to enforce equality, despite biology and markets.
The goal of equality gives claim to the moral high ground, but contradicting biology and markets requires censorship and violence, which makes the whole project immoral.
